memory lane - a quick guide.
Memory Lane is a loose environment in which several stories and/or fragments have ended up being set, either by design or by implication or simply accident.
Roughly speaking, the premise is that at some point the internet, which was being used instead of a memory by most people, collapsed leaving people 'blank'.
there appear to be a few distinct groups of 'survivors' .
1) purgs - these poor creatures have no ability to retain short term memory and lacked the established identity and long term memory to cope.
They feed off people's memories but it doesn't last - they are in effect vampires and cannibals.
2) memory vampires - this group is similar to the purgs but they have evolved or perfected the necessary skills to feed off memories and make them last for longer.
They are highly organised and can use artificial memories if necessary as well as group feeding from one source.
Some appear to have stable identities and past memories - but this may not be as true as it seems.
3) re-enactors - people who believe they have an identity and memory but are simply re-enacting either an individual's memories after a feed or implant -
or from an uploaded or vaguely remembered piece of entertainment such as a movie or tv show.
4) corporates - those in a position (with a large company) to have regular implants or memory doses.
5) everyone else - some of whom survive by donating memories to the corps and some of whom appear to be outside the main metropolis - in fact at sea.
Nothing is fixed and each entry may contradict - there is no real continuity -
so most of the non fan fic may be read as memory lane in some way. (especially the steam punk stories)

These four people maybe the same person, or perhaps split personas - or simply dream figments, but they are undoubtedly connected.
Ana - Apparently Suri's boss.
Harry - One of Lorna and Suri's colleagues.
Mr Shapiro - Actor, or re-enactor? visited in his home by Lorna and Suri.
Dr Lees - Pathologist in amobile (temporary) unit.
Veron - His assistant.
Leveaux - Sells memory to medi-tek, they tell him he's a valued client - but get his name wrong. He is apparently some sort of hardboiled noir type.
The Man - A mysterious figure.
Captain Falk - Leads the SeaBird crew.
Malcolm - A brave firefighter.
Bert - ditto.
Ray - one of the fire fighter crew but in a technical role.
Doug - fire chief.
Mrs R. Lake - evacuated in the CiviI War between the Plantagenets and the Windsors, interviewed by The Tymes. How much of her story is true is unclear - nor is there a definite link to the Memory Lane universe, although alt history has previously been suggested. (The Face behind the Glass, Babylon Dutch* etc)
I will expand these notes as time goes on.
