a language question re: Tarkovsky

Feb 21, 2012 14:54

my alter-history version of Tarkovsky made many films comparable to the real director, i have given them very similar names but, i hope, names that reflect something of their content.

now, my question is  - In Russian, would any of these film titles be the same as, or too similar to, that of their original???

there is a movie named The Mirror for a Hero (so it slightly resemble "Reflections")
but I am not a movie expert even in our own movies...

so I wait also impatiently what experts would say

aha! look below! Mr R has been helpful already :))

but you can help in another way...
i did not want the story to be about Russia (and especially not the Soviet Union) because that adds so much complexity.
so, i have invented the fiction region of Ukeland!
but now i wonder - is there already such a place???

nope, there isn't such a place, but it sounds like named exactly after me! (Simon calls me Юка) :))))

IMHO, Martyr is too close to the real name ("Жертва" vs "Жертвоприношение")

thanks, it's tricky;
Tarkovsky actually called his diary 'Martyrology' and i was stuck for an equivalent for 'Sacrifice', he had a much more relaxed way with religious terminology than i do so...
perhaps 'Miracle'???
which is fairly true to what happens in the film (IMO).

i will think it over...
cheers for the help, i'm very grateful :)

actually i could call 'Sacrifice', 'Ordeal' instead -
that would be very close to what the character in the film goes through and indeed how Tarkovsky thought of his life at that time - and it works in the religious sense, i think?

???

I honestly don't know. Sorry, I am afraid I do not understand precisely what are you trying to do :))) Do you want to make a new name, not too close to the old one, but close enough that a reader can make a guess?

i can't really help with the request, but i wanted to say that i do enjoy this journal excerpt. especially after reading that excerpt you sent me from what i'm assuming is the "Tunnel" mentioned in this piece.

i'm the dog and you're the dinner bell! how much longer must i salivate in anticipation for the final piece(of meat)?!

an interesting idea :)

but I take a pause to think... Besides, I should fresh in my memory Tarkovsky notes, I want to compare a style/ manner.

one title for one imaginary film or a few titles for several ones?

either; it'll keep my options open!

it widens my choices about what to include and what to (maybe) leave out. :)

here are the first that goes in my mind:

// One Life in the Day of a Child, Reflections, Tunnel, Martyr and Recollections. //

One Life in the Day of a Child --

I tried translating it into Russian and I saw that Russian version is quite clumsy from structure view, so in Russian I'd rename it as "Один день из жизни ребёнка (One Day of Child's Life)", it's quite good title, for example, there is a Soviet film drama "Один день из жизни начальника уголовного розыска" (One Day of Crime Ploice Chief's Life), if I'm not mistaken.

then,

Reflections + Recollections = "A Memory" (???)

yes - that's a good one - it's hard to come up with a substitute for Nostalgia because it's a very specific word, but that might work combining Mirror and Nostalgia so to speak. hmm... yes...*ponders*

But as for 'Childhood', i think you're right, it's better the way you phrase it. i will change that one for definite.

cheers! :))
