Our first computer was something that would be considered an antique now - A Franklin Ace 1000+.  I often wish I had that computer now - I think it’d be fun to take apart even if I didn’t think that some friend or another would think it was an awesome item to own.

Eventually, we moved into the modern era.  We got the first computer with a modem in it - this was after I’d graduated high school and completed my first semester of college.  1990, to give a frame of reference.

This computer led to a ritual for those people who used the modem - mostly me, chatting on local BBSs.  The modem had to be unplugged after the computer was shut down for the night - you had to crawl under the desk and unplug it.  Every single night.

Are you wondering why?  You should be.  You see, if you didn’t unplug the modem, the computer might use it to make phone calls in the middle of the night.
This was a man who clearly needed to watch 2001 a few more times.  Or maybe a few less times.  His quirks about technology never quite ended, either.  He always clicked on the little magic pop-up boxes and we won’t even talk about how much time I spent removing malware and spyware and viruses from his computer.  He called me his ‘live-in technical support’ and joked that he let me live here because I kept his computer running properly.
