engagement rings

So this is probably a story that I meant to tell earlier but just never got around to it until now.

The main reason I've remembered it, is that just last weekend, my brother-in-law proposed to his girlfriend of 6 years. Poor guy was desperately trying to keep it a surprise for everyone that he nearly went mad with the effort. Anyway, the girl has impeccable taste. She makes her own clothes and is gorgeous and stylish. So BIL (bro in law) was between a rock and a hard place finding the perfect ring for her without tipping off the surprise. The only clue he had was that she wanted a classic design - you know, a diamond and gold affair.

The boy pulled through and got her a raised round diamond on shoulders with a claw setting and a gold band.

Now this current situation is needed to put my story in context. As in she made a request and he fulfilled it.

When Z was thinking of proposing, he also asked me what I wanted. Now time for some backstory:

When I was in year 5 or 6, at the end of the year the top students got a gift of a metallic pen of which the two options were gold and silver. I went for the gold but when the girl in front of me in the line tested her gold pen, I was repulsed by it. The gold ink looked like baby poo. And to this day I dislike gold and prefer a silver colour. So when Z and I got together I told him this story and how he was never to buy me any gold jewellery. I also added that I loved the colour blue and he nodded saying the colour combination was very me.

Cue to question about ring. I told him that despite my dislike for gold, I wanted a classic ring. A diamond and gold affair.

His response?

NO.

Me: what?
Him: I see you as a sapphire (blue) and silver girl.
Me: One, I said "in spite" of that. And two, why the heck did you ask if you weren't going to listen?
Him: I meant more about the setting.
Me: are you sure I can't have a gold and diamond ring?
Him: *gives the look*
Me: fine. I like intricate metal work.

And he got me a beautiful ring.

The end.
