Wild Things

In honor of National Feral Cat Day...some pics of a few of our rescued feral cats--past and present.

Charlie holding our Beloved long-haired orange tabby Sam.

Dee, pale orange long-haired tabby rolling around wanting her belly rubbed.

Sam and his sister Dee were rescued from a Feral Colony in a steel mill.  They were awaiting death but a kind woman smuggled the two three-week old kittens out.

Church, aka Winston Churchill, aka Pudgie Pudge Bottom.  He was soooo thrilled when brought him into the house.  He was brown when we got him, but fattened up to a beautiful glossy black cat over time.

Darling, a beautiful calico with slanted green eyes.  She was the six months old when we finally caught her in a live trap.  She tamed up well in the crate, but went wild again after we let her roam the house.  She is 10-years old and we cannot touch her, she is still a Wild Thing.  However, she is warm when it's cold, dry when it rains and she never has to search for food or fresh water.

Bastet is a long-haired grey tabby.  In the picture she is next to a gargoyle.  Bastet was one of the kittens rescued from the feral colony where we used to work.   She was only 4.5 weeks old when we had to bring the litter home because they were walking and we were afraid that once they learned to run we would never catch them.

Joey.  He is a white tabby with brown and black hood and cape.  He has two spots on his pink nose and big green eyes.  Joey is Darlings littermate.  However, Charlie "scooped" up Joey as he ran past him one day.  Joe was about five weeks old then.  The next day he caught Nova aka QUEEN who is a long haired version of Joey.  All of that litter was born in the back of a Pontiac we were restoring.  The cars nickname was The Injun and that was Joey's original name.  However, Injun became Injun Joe and eventually Joey.

Asp is a brown spotted tabby.  Instead of all stripes, he has spots on his sides.  In the picture he is licking his nose.  He is Bastet's littermate.  The way he got his name:  We were looking at the kittens and he would hiss and strike at us like a snake.  He was the runt, but was determined to protect his two sisters and brother.  The other kittens are Anubis (Egyptian God of the Dead), Bes (Egyptian Dwarf God of Home & Hearth) and Bastet (Goddess of Cats) so we named him Asp, after the egyptian snake.  He has now become a "fat Asp"--Heh!

Lazarus aka Lazy is another spotted tabby--we think he has bengal or something like it in his background somewhere.  Lazy almost died several times--and that is a long story for another day.  ::wink::

Buddha aka Boo, a orange and white tabby laying on his back and nuzzling our beagle Jack.  Buddha lived a horrific life on the streets--abused and tortured and neglected.  It took months to win his trust and finally coax him to us.  He, too, is a long story for another day.  He deserves his whole story told.

These are just a few our rescued babies.  Sadly, Sam, Dee, Pudgie and Buddha are at Rainbow Bridge.

EDIT 2010:  Only Joey, Lazy and Bastet remain with us now...
EDIT:  We lost Lazy 1/11/11
