Kitt & I tried audiobooks on long trips and after the first hour it tends to lull me to sleep.
We started with a novella by Stephen King - The Sun Dog - because I'd read it before and thought Kitt would enjoy it. We did get through that one ok but needed to take breaks here and there.
Then we tried The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, gave up shortly into it, and hadn't bothered with audio books ever since.
Maybe on solo drives it's a different experience. Obviously listening together means that we have to stop when one of us stops listening. And when the road trip is over there's no more - we don't commute to work in one car.
I do read books, and enjoy reading in bed, but I don't think audio books are for me. In the car, I enjoy listening to music from my mp3 collection or on FM radio. And in the car Kitt seems to enjoy conversation or silence more than anything else.
I read all those books you mentioned except Dragon Riders and Starship Troopers. Ender's Game is a favorite, and I enjoyed the Hitchhiker series (I think I read the first 3 only, like you) and Snow Crash. Stranger in a Strange Land, I read around when I was a teenager, and enjoyed it. It had a lot of interesting concepts. It is memorable anyway, if not entirely riveting.
