So-called "friends"

You ever have those people you consider "friends" like at work, church, or some organization, but later find out that you're only like "work friends" and once one of you is gone, you don't hear from them again? Recently I had the need to contact 3 people from when I worked at my old property management job.  I was there 7 years so I made lots of friends. So I thought.  I chatted a few minutes with each, and each asked me to email them a photo, and I asked them the same kind of stuff of "catch me up in an email".  So I actually go home and either in that day or next, emailed, and asked them questions about things I knew about them.  Months have gone by at this point without their response and it just makes me wonder how pointless I must have been to them.

I just don't get it.  LIke a lot of people, I make friends with people I work with or go to church or have a common interest.  But why does it seem like even though I don't feel the relationship as so shallow that it's like h.s. vs. the h.s. reunion? At the reunion, you and someone were in the same circle but after you say the hellos and what've you been doing these 20 years? you both walk off and that's it.
