Supernatural - 5x03 - "Free To Be You and Me" Thoughts

Sep 30, 2009 18:38

I'm not going to bother going into masses of serious detail about last week's episode, but mainly just squee over what I loved, and post some general thoughts about what we found out.

So clearly, Dean and Castiel are at the top of my list. Having been a (non-slash) fangirl of these two for AGES, you can only imagine how ridiculously insane and flaily I got over all of their scenes together and interaction in this episode. Seriously, that was so much love!! Everytime I thought they couldn't be topped, along came a scene that was better than the last. It made me so happy. First off, the way Castiel just appeared behind Dean with no respect for social boundaries cracked me up, especially with the way he said "my apologies". Plus, I loved his confused!face so much, but never more so when Dean spouted off the line about Thelma and Louise. Case in point!

LOL! It's so confuzzled and blank-like and all "I literally have NO idea what you're talking about". Misha has the best facial expressions, seriously. And Jensen's reaction in turn, with Dean's slight exasperation was hilarious. But my favourite bit in this whole scene was definitely "I need your help, because you are the only one who will help me. Please." OH, CAS!! The sheer honesty, openness and unwavering expression of this was so well played, how he looked straight at Dean without breaking eye-contact to get the emotion in his plea across, and how Dean accepted whatever he saw there and agreed to help. It felt like they'd come full-circle, because more than once Castiel was the only person Dean could count on, so it's awesome that he can be there in that same role for him. I hope we get to see more of that, on both parts.

I also DEMAND more Dean and Castiel as partners-in-crime. I was literally bouncing with squee when Dean was fixing up his tie and shirt (because seriously, HOW CUTE?!?!), and I laughed my ass off when Castiel flipped his badge out wrong, and Dean had to fix it. The look on his face, how he didn't even peek at Castiel, and the fact Castiel himself just stared straight ahead at the police officer expectantly the whole time was absolutely hilarious and it just brings me sheer joy even thinking about it. This will never fail to make me laugh.

LMAO! The way the boys played this too makes me think that they must've had such a banterous time filming this episode, I can only imagine how much Misha and Jensen made each other crack up at their stupid antics XD. Special gag reel, please Kripke? I'd owe you my life!! By the way, Dean and Castiel at a brothel? I think this will go down as one of the funniest and weirdest scenes in Supernatural history. That was just mind-blowing - on the one hand, again, Misha WINS AT LIFE with his epically scared facial expressions, and Dean urging him on is so wrong and amusing all at the same time, but I can't over the fact they were at a brothel. Isn't that just a bit too weird? I know he has a vessel so technically, Castiel is, uh...equipped, but angels don't have romantic or sexual inclinations so how does that make sense that he would be up for losing his virginity, or even be bothered about the fact he'd never been with a girl? It boggles my brain. But again, it gave us some priceless reactions and awesome BFF-ness between Dean and Castiel, so I can get over it, haha. My fangirling heart takes precedence over logic and sense :-P. The way Dean was gleefully enjoying Cas' complete uncomfortableness cracked me up to no end, and I adore the fact they had to run away before they got into trouble. Also the way Dean was leaning over and laughing outside was so endearing and I love the silly way Castiel leaned over next to him and asked him what was so funny XD. He really is just clueless! I also like the little smile he had on his face, whether or not that was just Misha, I'm not sure, but it was adorkable. Like seriously, I just watched most of their scenes with a grin stretched from ear-to-ear and a fuzzy feeling inside. They make me so stupidly happy.

Concentrating more on Castiel himself for a moment, I think he was absolutely brilliant in this episode. He had a lot of different layers to him but he transitioned between each one flawlessly, and made it obvious that they're all a part of who he is. For example, his innocence when he insisted on just telling the truth was so child-like and a bit sweet, and it's obvious that he's becoming more in touch with his emotions, which was clear from how much more expressive he is, in his looks and gestures. And in a way he's still the quiet, thinking type we saw in S4 - "I just thought I'd sit here quietly" (sidenote: *squishes him*). But above everything, he is still a complete and utter BAMF. The way he trapped Raphael and refused to back down from the guy who'd basically destroyed him, from the threat of being destroyed again, was just FUCKING AWESOME. When Castiel said "today you're my little bitch", not gonna lie, I cheered. And Dean's "what he said" was the icing on the cake XD.

Raphael was a great character himself, so intense and overbearing, and quite clearly powerful, but in a really deadly calm, reserved way. The guy who played him did a great job. I don't necessarily like him as a character, since he's seriously mean and scary, but I wouldn't mind seeing him back again, especially if it means a showdown between him and Castiel, that would be crazy. But I think all his spiel about God being dead was total smack, and especially the part about Lucifer possibly resurrecting Castiel. I don't believe he's powerful enough, for one thing, especially without a sufficient vessel, and why would he have bothered moving Sam and Dean AWAY from where he was? It would've been easier just to leave them there! So yeah, I'm still a firm believer of God being somewhere in the universe, but I just don't have a clue where, unless, like I said in my 5x01 post, he/she is incapacitated somehow, similar to Dogma. Ooh, I also thought the parallels between the angels/God and Dean/John were really interesting, they really struck me when Dean said "yeah, who would be so proud to know that his sons started the friggin' Apocalypse!" (what's the bet he thought of his dad then?), and Raphael replied "who ran off and disappeared; who left NO instructions and a world to run". It just reminds me of Dean's situation way back in S1, but despite the fact he was essentially abandoned by his father too, he didn't go off the deep end, but instead he had the love, strength and willpower to go looking for him and do some hunting along the way - his "world" in comparison to the actual physical world the angels are responsible for. It just really shows how determined and strong he is as a person, physically and emotionally, and dare I say it, even stronger than the angels. They gave up, and he didn't, which just speaks for itself, really.

Of course, the similarities at the end between Dean and Castiel and their respective searches for their fathers were strikingly obvious, and I loveloveLOVE that Dean gave him a pep talk. I love that he told him not to give up, if Castiel himself still believes God was out there; I love that essentially Dean supported him. That's what friends are for, right? :-) And then Castiel did the same thing, prodding Dean to talk about Sam. Which by the way, was not convincing at all - I don't know who you're trying to kid Dean, but you're not happy at all. I think maybe he's "happy" in the sense that he does he doesn't have to immediately worry about Sam for once, and he isn't constantly faced with the stress and pressure of having to look out for him and think about his little brother potentially going darkside again, but that doesn't mean he's okay. Having spent the last 4 years with him, how could it be that easy to just turn off those feelings of love, comfort, family and friendship, even the angst that comes with everything, and just be okay on his own? This coming from Dean, who does EVERYTHING for his family? Not possible. Which reminds me, I really liked how the opening scenes were edited together, and showed Dean and Sam doing similar sort of things even while being apart - they're in-tune, it's inevitable. I also thought it was significant that even though we got a couple of small moments that indicated the brothers missed each other (Sam debating calling Dean, Dean looking at the empty seat in the Impala), they were enough to show how much the boys missed each other, and how their respective absences affected each other. When you've got brothers like these who've literally been through hell together, you don't need extravagant gestures to get it, it's all in the small but important details.

And finally, the Sam/Lucifer debacle. Well, I'm now really depressed, because we all knew this was coming, but the fact it's now official SUCKS ASS. I DON'T WANT SAM TO BE LUCIFER'S VESSEL!!! I was SO freaking proud of him for not swallowing the demon blood and refusing to take part in any sort of temptation, but now I'm kinda despairing because I'm thinking he will end up Lucifer's vessel, and then Dean's going to have to kill him, thus fulfilling the doomed prophecy John left, and then he'll kill himself because he can't live without his brother, and we'll have the most depressing end to the show EVER *bawls* SAY IT AIN'T SO, KRIPKE. What do I have to do to ensure this never happens? Name your terms, seriously, because I couldn't live with this happening. I'm hoping against all hope that Sam manages to resist with every fiber of his being, and Lucifer doesn't somehow coerce or manipulate him into saying "yes". Brother vs. brother is my ultimate nightmare, and it looks like it might be coming true :-(. Please let them prove me wrong. PLEEEEEEEEASE.

By the way, how freaking annoying was Lindsay? Seriously, shut the hell up, you nosy bint! You've known the guy for all of a week and you think that entitles you to prodding him about his life story? NO. People don't do that, it's rude and just lacks manners! *tuts* Honestly, she was a pain. And on another random sidenote, did anyone else think there might've been something distinctly foreshadowey about the way Castiel said "There's almost an open phone line between a vessel and his angel. One just has to know how to dial"? I'm wondering if that means the phone line goes both ways, and somehow Michael will contact Dean at some point during the upcoming episodes. That would be fairly epic.

On a lighter note to end, it made me snerk that he mentioned phone lines, and then it sounded like he totally said the word "Nokia" during his Latin chant in the vessel's ear XD. I'd love it if that was slipped in there deliberately!

tv shows, in my opinion, tv: supernatural, fangirlism
