tv catch-up thoughts

Jul 15, 2009 00:28

I've been catching up with all my various "current" shows I was still behind on from the past few months, and I finally finished the other day!! So now I can actually get on with my list and watch a few new things, hopefully. Anyway, I had many thoughts tumbling about my head so I figured I'd squee/rant/flail/whatever about the shows here. They won't be reviews as such, but general ramble-y opinions.

I think it's safe to assume there will be spoilers.

Chuck

This was my biggest obstacle, only in the sense that I had 6 episodes to watch and it was the last show I got round to. But I basically sat down and power-watched them all in one go on Sunday, and OMFG, I can't believe it took me this long to get through them!!!

The ending was SO AWESOME! I really love the fact that Chuck is a super-spy now, and I loved the way they set that up throughout the last few episodes in S2, especially since he had been using his Charles Carmichael alias a lot more. It's a crazy note to end the season/show on, and so I'm fucking ecstatic that it was renewed for S3, because seriously, leaving it there would've been torture. I can't wait to see what kinda stuff he gets up to in the new season!! Zachary Levi is probably going to have a blast too, purely because he gets to kick some butt now XD. I loved the way Devon found out about Chuck being a spy, I'm so glad someone in his family knows now, even if just for the funny factor. And I thought it was brilliant that they finally introduced his dad, but especially as Orion, that was crazy! It almost seems far-fetched and crazy but then the whole concept of the show is so I can live with it, haha. Also, the Buy More gang = EPIC LOVE. I can't describe everything that cracked me up about them in those last few episodes, but Jeffster performing at Ellie and Devon's wedding was definitely one of the highlights. I'm so glad they're married now, they're beyond cute together.

A couple of things I liked a little less - Morgan better NOT be leaving and buggering off to Hawaii, or I will seriously bust a cap. That is NOT EVEN NEGOTIABLE. Also, I'm quite gutted that Bryce is dead!! :-( I actually really liked him, he was an interesting character, and I liked his dynamics with Chuck, and Sarah. I liked that we got to see him come back occasionally, and throw a spanner into the works. Gah, I hate that he's gone! And I'm sorry to anyone who ships Chuck/Sarah, because I know there are A LOT of you, but I seriously couldn't care less, and it's all to do with my dislike of Sarah. I don't know what it is about her but she's never clicked for me as much as the rest of the characters have, and she just bugs me to all hell, so I really don't like the way the show has become less "Chuck" and more "Chuck and Sarah's Story". I wish they'd just slept together in the finale and gotten that out the way so I didn't have to sit through the build-up anymore. Gah, she/the whole thing just really bugs me, I hope they wrap that up somehow in the next season.

But anyway, the show is still made of win, and I'm a total noob for not watching it sooner. Bring on season 3!!!

Dollhouse

This one did just get better and better throughout the season, and wow, the ending blew my mind.

First off, Alan Tudyk. Is. LEGEND! Can I just take a moment to SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE my head off over his not only being in the finale, but being ALPHA?!!?!? WTF. I so did not see that coming, but that was AWESOME! I actually love him so much, and his performance in both roles, first as nervous geeky Dollhouse-designer to complete psycho uber-active was just immense, he played it so well. I take my hat off to him, seriously, and I was just really happy to see him back on TV, and in a Joss show, no less :-D. As for all the reveals, with Alpha being obsessed with Echo, Dr. Saunders actually being an active called Whiskey, her past relationship with Alpha...just WOW. It’s safe to say I didn’t see any of that coming. I like how things ended though, with Echo becoming even more powerful than him, and being able to retain a sense of herself and her identity, as much as he tried to make her kill it, so I’m glad she beat him, but I’m also glad he didn’t die. It just leaves the way open for more awesomeness and possibilities, and I can’t wait to see what happens in S2, especially with the fact that Echo obviously still remembers Caroline! The finale in general was just EPIC, seriously.

Other things I enjoyed - Topher has grown on me so much throughout, I didn’t like him at first but I’ve definitely warmed to him, he’s not as much of an ass as I originally thought. I thought the episode where he imprinted a friend onto Sierra to celebrate his birthday was so bittersweet. He’s a favourite of mine now. I’m glad Paul negotiated Mellie/November’s freedom, that was sweet. Kinda sad to see her go, though! As for the Paul/Echo thing in general, meh. I don’t see the appeal, just because he comes across as a bit stalker-ish and obsessed in his bid to find her, because clearly Caroline volunteered for the Dollhouse, she wasn’t forced into it. I don’t see anything “real” between them, just a bit of a twisted “I must rescue the damsel-in-distress” complex on his part. But we’ll see what happens, especially with his working for the Dollhouse now. That should be interesting! Ooh, also the whole stuff with Dominic being a traitor was a total shock, I didn’t see that coming either. His end was brutal. It’s a shame because I enjoyed his dynamic with DeWitt.

Anyway, I’m also beyond happy that Dollhouse will be back, FUCK YES! It’s about time FOX made up for the way they screwed over Joss and Firefly.

Glee

I downloaded this on the recommendation of a few people, but I didn’t really know what to expect...I have to say, I’m intrigued and entertained enough to keep watching the show when it starts airing properly.

I don’t see how so many people are SO OBSESSED with this already, but I do think it was alright. I was a bit put-off by the singing-and-dancing kids club, because it really does just scream HSM to me, but so far the concept has been executed better than those awful films were, and I don’t feel like killing any of the characters because they annoy me that much, so we’re good. I like the quirkiness of the humour, and the “Breakfast Club” feel of the kids in Glee Club, I hope we get to see if/how their relationships grows. glitterisblue, I know you’re a HUGE Rachel/Finn fan, but I’m sorry hun, I don’t see it! At least not yet, just because I found Rachel a bit conceited and annoying. And I don’t like how obvious that pairing is, but again, we’ll see what happens in the rest of the season, I guess. I do quite like the teacher guy...yeah, I liked it overall, and I’ll watch it when it airs, but I’m not too hooked at the moment.

Harper’s Island

I know when I first posted about this with Southland and The Unusuals, I said it was my least favourite out of the new shows, but it quickly grew on me. I’m sad it’s over, but it had an awesome run!

I’ll admit, I had my suspicions throughout the show that Henry might be the killer, so the fact that he was an accomplice to Wakefield wasn’t a total shock, but the entire twist at the end, with the reveal of his motives and obsession with Abby was, haha. Wow, I did not see that coming! I actually felt really sorry for him, and more so when Abby killed him, but then I remembered all the bloodshed and how he murdered his lifelong friends in cold blood, so the sympathy quickly disappeared. But wow. What an amazing way to wrap up the series! So it really was about Abby all along, but just not in the way we originally thought it was. I can’t stress enough how well-made and well-written this show was, I just loved everything about it. How the mystery unravelled, the horror and shock factor, the misleads and hard-to-guess twists, the gruesome deaths - it really was a classic murder-mystery and it was just so much fun to watch! The show did start off a bit slow, but as we got more episodes into it, and more people started to die, and then the islanders actually found out about the killings, things quickly escalated and the danger-factor was significantly upped. Trying to guess who the killer was and who would die, and then actually seeing it unravel on-screen was quite entertaining. And as someone who’s shit-scared of horror in general, it wasn’t actually that bad. I just covered my eyes for most some of the deaths, haha. Also, Jim Beaver was just awesome throughout, and I have a new respect for Christopher Gorham and Katie Cassidy, both of whom I could just take or leave before, to be honest. They really did well with the material they had. Actually, the cast in general was pretty great, although I’m still quite gutted about Sully, Danny, Cal and Chloe’s deaths too :-(. The videotape ending was bittersweet, and a nice homage to the people who’d died. But yeah, I think it was a great one-off concept for a show, and I’m glad I watched this, it was just great entertainment overall.

Southland

Like I said when I first started watching this, I’m not too big on cop dramas in general, but I really enjoyed this one.

It makes me quite sad that Russell died! I wasn’t too big on his character at first, because he seemed a bit sleazy, but he grew on me some, and I didn’t want him to die! Especially not when he’d just reconciled with his wife, that was really harsh. I have a futile hope that he might still be alive but after getting shot in the chest point-blank, I doubt that’ll happen, boo-urns. Anyway, this show was awesome overall, always so gritty and realistic and enthralling. It made me nervous watching it sometimes just because I got so involved in a scene and didn’t quite know what to expect, especially with the hand-held cameras and jumpiness. But it was an effective technique. I really enjoyed the storyline with Janilla and Detectives Sammy Bryant and Nate Moretta, I thought the dynamic they had was SO cute and sweet! Especially between Janilla and Sammy. He and Nate are definitely favourite characters, but I also really enjoyed watching Ben Sherman and John Cooper interact, they made a great team too. I have a theory about John and his private life, but I’m wondering if I’m just reading too much into it...I’ll have to see what happens and what’s revealed. I didn’t like the shortness of the season though, because while it felt like a couple of things were wrapped up, there were a lot of loose ends, which isn’t too satisfying. But hopefully those will be addressed in the next season, which I’m happy about! I’m half-dreading and half-looking forward to seeing what happens next, especially when the squad finds out about Russell :-/.

The Unusuals

This was possibly too unusual for some people’s tastes, but entertaining for me all the same, and I’m still really sad it was cancelled. It was a lot of fun.

I kinda loved this show, despite the fact it only ran for 10 episodes. I really liked the quirky humour and the very different, individual characters, and it just really made me laugh! I liked that while there was a lot of comedy, and some of it ridiculous, there was a more serious undertone at times, and the show had heart, especially in some of the cases the officers found themselves in, and in their relationships with each other. I loved each different pairing of detectives, for different reasons - Banks and Delahoy were like a bickering old married couple, but also really like brothers, while Beaumont and Cole were unusual but quite sweet. I also liked the growing friendship between Casey and Walsh, and surprisingly, didn’t ship them straightaway! They’re a bit too obvious, I could’ve seen it happening down the line at some point, but I actually really liked the fact Walsh was with Beaumont. I also liked the little thing Delahoy had with the Medical Examiner. I just really, really liked the show in general, and I’m bummed I won’t get any more of the crazy funniness each week.

Wow, that was stupidly long, but I think I'm done! Now I can finally get on with watching new stuff :-D.

tv: glee, sad, tv shows, tv: dollhouse, in my opinion, tv: chuck, squee
