Decided to update a lot more frequently, so here's another.
Decided to not take the Simcor tonight - I still feel like I'm suffering from a slight sunburn on my arms & legs. I also don't want to risk having a reaction like I did last night two nights in a row - it sucked that bad and I have a high pain tolerance. Plus, two nights in a row with little sleep, I'd need to take a sick day and rest because I would be tired at work.
In Geek news, I built a new powerful computer to replace the laptop I use for my Kitten Cam (which in turn replaced a Mac Mini). Encoding the video stream into four different qualities from mobile devices to HD takes a good amount of horse power. Back in the Mac Mini days, Livestream had free accounts but with only low quality. I picked up the laptop because I was planning on hosting everything at home - but the software to do everything I wanted including having multiple cams live costed in the thousands. There are multiple solutions but the mature products all cost an arm & both legs.
Then Livestream came out with a new account structure where I could broadcast an HD feed for $44 a month. I decided to jump on it and gave up the multi-cam angle. I had the 3rd generation hardware up and running for two days - and it died. Since things were really CPU intensive, I put in a water cooler for the CPU but it turned out to be noisy to keep up with the heat dispersion. I was experimenting with different temp thresholds and fan speeds to see if I could find the sweet spot. I was thinking that maybe the fans would be more effective if there was a greater difference from the ambient temp and the water temp and thus run quieter. I was closely watching the temps and they were still in the yellow when the computer suddenly shut off. Turns out the power supply burned out and killed the motherboard - which I found out after putting in a new power supply and turning it on and the motherboard smoked. Murder-suicide. No idea if the AMD CPU is still good but I think it is.
I switched to an Intel CPU and a far better CPU water cooler. I had the CPU cranked at full utilization & the new cooler on low speed and it kept up like a champ. I'll probably switch back from the laptop to it Wednesday night and see how things go.
