Oh What a Night...
First of all I just want to say "I didn't know that much blood could come out of a penis" I didnt' have hard patients at least they shouldn't have been hard. Families where my first problem in one room they just agitate and in another they just make her worry.
I have to assure my patient that fixing her heart is much more important then fixing her knee. "But I need my knee to walk" "Well your heart is pretty important part of walking too"
I tuck my big burley guy in for the night he's pleasantly confused. That didn't last. Next thing I know I hear my name being called in the hallway as I try to soothe my nervous lady. Five minutes after the nurse's aide left the room he was found naked at the door way. Till I get to the room there is blood all over the floor. I find the blood comming from the naked guy's penis what I can't find is the catheter. I call the doctor and get haldol. The guys still bleeding all over the place. Fast forward a couple of minutes and there is two guys from security, two nurses, a nurse extender, a nurse partner, and a urologist inserting a cath and cleaning up the frank blood on the floor because environmental won't touch blood.
A couple of hours later he vagals during a bowel movement that must have been keeping him fighting the sedation, b/c after the bowel movement his pressure went to the 70s and he was very hard to arrouse.
A couple of hours later I'm in the other room. The post plasty lady's groin looks great. We get out of bed. "Ouch,I just got a really sharp pain in my groin" Large hematoma.
What a horrible night. I haven't felt like this since I was just off orientation. I don't like this. I don't want to do it again.
