Hawai'i II

Aloha!

I'm still on Oahu, at a gay club once again as much for internet access as seemingly-familiar company. It's a little busier tonight, and that's a welcome change. Hula's is the focal point of gay culture for the state, and it's one room that's probably 40 x 50 feet or so; I estimate that there are perhaps 40 people here. That's a little disappointing, particularly given that probably four out of five here are visitors to the islands.

But, I'm having a great time. We drove around most of the island today, and visited the greatest surfing beach on Earth. My parents watched as surfers 500 feet out surfed overwhelmingly outrageous 40-foot waves, and I watched wet surfer lads return to walk along the shore in front of where I stood with hands in my pockets.

Then we drove some of the most magnificent "highway" I'll ever see. Such routes here are just one lane in each direction, and are flanked by waterfalls on one side and spraying surf along the other. If you're ever given the opportunity to drive such a road, decline. I quite wish someone else had been driving. :)

We head to The Big Island on Friday, where we'll see plants and miss Battlestar Galactica (readers: please TiVo it for me!). We'll spend Saturday walking the lava fields near active flows along the shore, and I hope to hike a jungle trail on Sunday.

Kate, you and ALL my friends are not only invited to come visit when I move here in perhaps a year, you're expected here, so that I can treat you to the "Aloha spirit" that prevails here. In the mean time, if you post your snail mail address to my journal and I can get back on line in time, I'll send a postcard to you.

Mahalo!
