Calgary Goes Smoke-Free in 2007…

With a Few Exceptions

Smoke-Free Calgary is pleased to announce that City Council voted eleven to four in support of moving forward Calgary’s smoke-free bylaw from January 1, 2008 to January 1, 2007 (with a few exceptions).

All bars and restaurants will be smoke-free, except for the estimated one hundred establishments that installed smoking rooms prior to July 1, 2006. These one hundred establishments will continue to operate smoking rooms until January 1, 2008. In addition, an amendment to the bylaw provided an exemption to gaming facilities (including bingos and casinos) permitting smoking in these facilities until 2008.

Proposed amendments that were NOT successful included changing the existing smoke-free patios to allow smoking and permitting smoking in gaming establishments indefinitely.

We owe tremendous thanks to our Smoke-Free Calgary supporters for their relentless efforts to support a 100% smoke-free city. The work of thousands of Calgarians has finally paid off! Smoke-Free Calgary would also like to recognize City Council for its commitment to this issue, and for making the health of Calgarians a top priority.

This is One Giant Step for Public Health in Alberta!

Thank you Calgary!
