There has been this meme type thing going around where someone posts 5 things that they associate you with. You then elaborate on those concepts and in return, you post 5 things you associate with them so they can do the same elaboration. I recently posted 5 things to firehauke and she reciprocated. Here is what she said about me.....
scrapbooking
India
teaching
SCA
history
I will elaborate on these 5 things. I would love for any who reads this to post me 5 things they associate with me and I'll do the same for them. I just love this type of thing.
1. Scrapbooking.....I love taking pictures and art. Scrapbooking meshes the two and allows me to be artistic and indulge my love of paper/glue/scissors/ephemera to make beautiful picture books. I never have enough time to do as much scrapping as I would like. I've now branched out into visual journaling which is closely related to scrapbooking, however, its not as pristine and symmetrical. Vj lets you be creative with journaling and drawing and collaging, using bits of flotsam and jetsam to fill up pages in a journal. It appeals to my electic sense of artistic expression.
2. India.....My favorite place in the whole world. The best trip I've ever taken with the most insane memories and happenings in my life. Spending a month there fed my soul and my spirit with the sights, sounds, smells, people, spirituality, history, color and architecture of such an old and enduring civilization. I even went so far as to marry an Indian, have 3 gorgeous children by him, learned to cook Indian and Pakistani food, speak one of the languages and immerse myself into the study of the country and spirituality of that place. In my past life I must have been Indian.
3. Teaching.....I have never wanted to do anything else as an occupation other than teach. I'm basically a story teller at heart. I impart my love of history through stories of my travels as well as the stories of people. If I can impart one ounce of knowledge to these children that I have the fortune of interacting with on a daily basis, then I've accomplished my job. I love it. I don't want to do anything else. It gives me a sense of satisfaction when a child wants to give me a hug, says hello every time they pass me in the hall even if I just saw them in class, sits on the edge of their seat with rapt attention as I relate something about cultures in other parts of the world, asks me questions, tells me thank you, their eyes light up when they finally "get it", a child goes from being a mediocre student to one who is excited about what we are studying and their grades improve, the comraderie and friendship of the teachers I work with. Yes, it can be frustrating. Yes, children today are less eager to learn, more antsy, more disrespectful, come from horrible situations at home that spill over into their daily school lives, parents blame the teacher for the lack of effort of their children and on and on. Still. This is my life and I love it.
4. SCA.....My love of history and all things medieval and rennaissance fueled my desire to get involved with the SCA. My mobility issues with the knees and arthritis severely limit how much I play nowadays. Fred and I joined House Roanwoulfe and have made wonderful friends and have gained a family that we enjoy playing SCA with as well as just socializing with. I love beautiful garb but I hate to sew so I totally procrastinate on making garb. I love the fighting, seeing all the A&S that people get involved in and the whole pomp and circumstance. I don't worry too much about the politics of the whole peerage thing. I go to have fun and people watch. I wish there was more music at events however. Even though I love this hobby, I'm still puzzled however at those who eat, sleep, and live the SCA to the exclusion of other hobbies and outlets.
5. History.....Without history, where would we be? No matter what it is, its all history. As a history teacher, I love the research and learning about new eras, cultures, people, events, etc. Knowing the past helps us prepare for the future. What else is there to say about it?
