Today was an optional work day at school. Due to the snow, we have a two hour delay. However, here it is at 11am and I'm still sitting in my nightgown and watching the inauguration of our new president. I will most probably head up to the school in a bit but wanted to catch as much of this history making event as possible.
No matter what party you profess to be, what your political views are, what prejudices you harbor deep within your psyche, no one can negate that the changing of the guard of our country is exciting and holds much hope for renewal of our country. I watch the inauguration each election year if I can. Many have been candidates I didn't particularly want to be in the highest office of our land. But watching the pomp and circumstance as well as the shear numbers of people that turn out, shows that the U.S. people take this seriously and it is indeed indicative of the greatness of our nation.
I'm seeing right now all the former living presidents and their wives. It really feels good to see them all smiling and interacting like they could possibly actually like to be in each other's company. Carter is looking pretty good and Rosalyn never seems to age. Wasn't aware the Bush Sr. was walking with a cane. He and Barbara look much the same. Clinton and Hilary are schmoozing. Her coat is not very flattering but she looks good.
As a History teacher, this is all so interesting to me. The amount of planning that goes into the inauguration, the traditions and procedures for swearing in of the Vice President and President, reactions of the people that brave the cold and crowded conditions to be there and be a part of history, the armed forces bands and accompanying "national" music...it all meshes together to reflect our democracy and government. If anyone thinks this is a waste of time and boring, I feel for their lack of knowledge, sentimentality and thankfulness for the freedoms we enjoy in this country.
Well, I'm off to watch more and get dressed to head up to school. Hopefully the streets are clear by now.
