what the heck?

My bank sent me an email tonight informing me that my account has been locked due to too many unsuccessful login attempts. The problem is that I haven't tried to log into my account for weeks. There's no need. I don't have much money! That happens when you've been unemployed for 4 years ( Read more... )

I occasionally get false emails like that about my checking account and a couple of my credit card accounts. The first couple emails I was worried, but the more I look at the emails and think about it, those emails are from fake accounts, made to look like my bank, trying to get me to follow the links and log in. I think these are ways and means for scammers to get your ID and password.

Don't follow the links provided in the emails, and don't log in to your accounts through those emails. Go log in to your bank login separately, chances are, this is a false email, a scammer. If it is legitimate, then someone independent is trying to get into your account, so you need to log in and change your ID and password. Good luck.

Oh, I wish it were that easy, but no. It's a legitimate email. No links taking me anywhere, just advising me to log onto my own account from the BBT website and change my password or call the BBT phone number. So yeah, it's real. *sigh*

At least there's less than $200 in the account. Anybody hacking it won't get much, if they're even successful.

Thanks!!

Sorry to hear that this was actually legitimate. That really sucks. I hope you are able to sort it out without too much trouble.

I would be a little worried but your account should be safe if they've locked it.
It sucks that someone was trying to access it though. Would be good if they could track down the computer used but they probably don't do that.

I would go and physically speak to someone, it might have been a fake email, or alternatively someone is trying to access your account, but talking to a human being in person would be the best bet!

That's crazy! Is it an actual legit email from your bank and not one of those phishing scams? If not I'd definitely let the bank know about this. It sounds very fishy when you haven't tried to log in to your account in such a while.

Sounds like it might be a good idea to cancel it if they charge you like that for inactivity. At one of my last jobs, I had another account at the bank in the building where I worked (it was so convenient), but I finally canceled it because they were charging me per month for inactivity too.
