i've been very productive this week and our weather has been brilliant with temps high 60s and NO wind. makes me happy :)
for two days, i've been outside raking tumbleweeds away from our various fences and burning them. last night i was in the home stretch pulling a mountain of dried, blown in junk from along side the duck pen when i saw a snake all bunched up in the corner. i didn't freak out since i could see right away he wasn't a rattlesnake (thank goodness). but he was a big sucker and his shear size creeped me out. he was too big for me to use my rake so i went inside for the .22 pistol. i have to admit i felt a little bad about shooting him - bullsnakes are supposed to be 'good' snakes, but he was so big i was no where near comfortable thinking he was living around my barn. *shudder*
so the big fellow met his demise quickly. we stretched him out to measure, we were thinking looking at him coiled up that he was a 4-foot-er which is BIG for around here. well, he measured right at 6 feet. that's FEET, 12" times 6. yowzer.
i keep wondering how long he has made his home around the barn. a bullsnake doesnt get that big eating bugs. i've had chicks disppear and duck eggs but nothing else obvious. but there is always chicken food and corn around, so makes me think, hmmm. fortunately none of my immediate neighbors have small children. if they'd gone missing, i might have been suspicious.
he was reeeeeeally big i tell you.
