OK, so, I adore Dolly Parton, and have for quite some time. Here's why:
Some time back, Dolly had her own show on network TV. It was called (originally enough) 'The Dolly Parton Show', if I recall correctly, and it was a musical variety show. Fun, but not something one would normally consider a life-altering experience. :) But it was what came at the end of the show that did, indeed, influence my life in a big way.
Dolly has a song (you know this, of course; it's ridiculously famous) called 'I will Always Love You'. As a whole, it's a song of deep regret, letting go, and unfailing love for the one that was lost. Taken in part, however, it's simply about pure, unconditional love.
Well, at the end of every episode of that show, every single episode, she sang that song, in part. She sang it out to everyone watching... to the whole world, really. She sang that she wished us joy, and happiness, and everything we've ever wanted, but above all of this she wished us love. She sang that she would always, always love us, every one. And every single time, you could see that she meant it. Not abstractly, but with her whole being. I've seen a lot of people in my life who knew, really knew, how to fake that sort of thing effectively. But not like this, and certainly not so constantly, consistantly. No, she was honestly expressing a boundless love for each of us, personally, every time.
Later in life, as I learned more about myself, and began to discover how very much I care about people, how fundamental love and caring are to my life, I thought back to that show, and I suddenly grokked it in fullness. 'Yes, Dolly,' I thought, 'I know the feeling.'
And although I may never be able to emulate her skill at expressing love so well, so effectively, I will do what I can to express that beauty to the best of my ability.
So, I want you to know, when you see me here telling you that I love you, it's not out of custom, or quirk, or habit. I mean it, deeply and completely, every single time.
Don't forget, eh? :)
I love you (yes, you!)
