Last night I had a wacky dream. As is normal with my dreams, I don't remember most of it, but what I do remember is this:
Most of the first part of the dream revolved around consulting with Stephen Colbert regarding some important matter. For some reason this consultation involved a lot of zooming around on a speedboat with him standing boldly at the fore in a sort of Washington-crossing-the-Delaware pose, wearing a white two-piece suit.
That wasn't the wacky part.
So we (Kristine and I) came home from our consultation to our home (which was actually my house from when I grew up) and checked out our car. Before we left to seek out Colbert, we'd found a curious carrot niblet (I'm told they're actually called baby carrots, but I've always called them niblets, I think.) which had a black spot on it, like it had been burned or somehow went bad in just one small circle. We'd naturally put it under the hood of our car, like you do, y'know?
That wasn't the wacky part, either.
So anyway, like I was saying, we got home, and before we went in we decided to check on the niblet. So we opened the hood of the car, and found that the niblet had grown to about the size of a jumbo spaghetti sauce jar, and the black spot was about the size of a lid for such a jar (though it wasn't in the right place for a lid; it was on the side.) I picked it up and looked around and found that there was an identical black spot on the other side, as though there were a cylindrical section of black badness going through the giant niblet.
NOW we're coming to the wacky bit. Also creepy.
So naturally, we asked Stephen Colbert what to do about this strange giant niblet. He gave us a special camera, and instructed us to look at it through the lens of the camera while half-pressing on the shutter button (as one does when readying the flash). We did so, and through the lens of the camera we saw that emerging from the black spot was a mass of sharp, whiplike tentacles lashing about, which were invisible without the camera. I freaked out, given that I had just been holding the niblet in my bare hands, and looked at my hands through the camera. Through the camera lens they were covered with bleeding cuts and scratches.
Fortunately for us, being seen through the camera not only showed the monster, it also hurt it, and the longer we looked at it the more it shrank back into the niblet, until finally it looked the same through the camera as without it.
Relieved but still nervous, we went inside the house (leaving the niblet under the hood of the car), locked the doors securely, and went to have a nap on the floor of the master bedroom (there being no furniture in the house). And that's where the dream ended.
Happily, while the monster bit was terrifying during the dream, the fear dissipated as I woke. Not so happily, my hands have felt weird all day, which is an unsettling little psychosomatic reaction. Whee!
