This is just so far from any way I have ever thought about any characters, ever, that I have to do it. None of these questions, or their answers, would ever have occurred to me on my own - not for any character! So that means, of course, that I have to challenge myself to try and answer them. Go on, give me some names! You know you want to.

Well, I'm shocked. (Part Two) wyncatastrophe August 8 2011, 12:34:37 UTC
6. Is there anything about the character you would change?

Not really. I mean, the nature of Palpatine kind of drives the whole story, doesn't it? I think if his character were changed, it would twist the whole story, and I like it the way it is.

(On the other hand, this is a good excuse for AU fic.)

7. If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how would you see yourself interacting with him/her? Would you get along well? Fall in love with him/her? Dislike? Have a friendly rivalry?

If I were so unfortunate as to meet Palpatine in real life, I would keep my head down and get the hell out of there. Luckily I have no qualities a Sith Lord would likely feel motivated to exploit, so I'd probably be pretty safe.

8. Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?

I'm not sure how to take this question when the character is a villain. But no, I don't think so - except in the sense that he is deliciously underdeveloped in SW canon. I think, from a mythological view, Palpatine is the only one in the story who really works for me. The others kind of make me feel like they're just people, about whom we don't have nearly enough information: Palpatine as an unknowable force of malevolence comes across really well: we don't know him personally, and we don't need to. The story actually works better without it.

9. Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about this character (if you dislike) to someone new to fandom?

Palpatine is a great villain, so yeah, I'd probably hype him. (His undisguised glee is his own nefariousness is not-to-be-missed.)

10. Is this character popular with the fandom?

Hm. I don't move around in fandom that much, but I'm going to say no. I think in fan fiction circles particularly, he's underused. Not enough ficcers grapple with the complexities surrounding the saga's main villain. And it's a shame, because he is very colorful.
