This is just so far from any way I have ever thought about any characters, ever, that I have to do it. None of these questions, or their answers, would ever have occurred to me on my own - not for any character! So that means, of course, that I have to challenge myself to try and answer them. Go on, give me some names! You know you want to.

Well, I'm shocked. (Part One) wyncatastrophe August 8 2011, 12:22:38 UTC
Because you'd definitely never ask anything about Palpatine…

1. What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her.

As I mentioned to darth_eldritch, this is really two questions. And I feel obliged to point out now that combining them is a little ridiculous. But since that's the meme: a) My opinion of Palpatine is that he is the smartest guy in the room, almost always. It's the "almost" that gets him in the end; and b) I'm not sure what this part is supposed to mean. Do I think he is a decent being? Well, no, he's pretty unapologetically evil. But he is fun to watch.

2. is he/she important to the general plot?

In some ways, Palpatine is the general plot. I mean, you could make the argument that that's Anakin, but the thing is: without Palpatine, Anakin is just an extremely talented, compassionate guy. That's a personality, not a plot. And he's not going anywhere but up, so it's not much of a character arc, either. So … yeah.

3. Can you relate to this character at all? Does he/she grip you emotionally?

Palpatine doesn't grip me emotionally - I find him kind of inaccessible in that way, and I think it's kind of the point. Regular human emotions aren't really something I think he has anymore; he gave them up in his quest for unlimited power. But I think everybody can relate, at least a little bit, to the impulse to manipulate others for our own good and sometimes theirs as well. At the end of the day, it's selfishness, and I think we all have that. The challenge is not to give our selfishness rein, whereas Palpatine clearly gives his its head, so to speak. And that acknowledgement of selfishness as something we all have in common - whether we choose to act on it or not - is sort of an access-point into the character for me.

Plus, he's obsessed with Anakin Skywalker, and I can totally see his point.

4. How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?

Very much!

5. Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by his/her relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)

As I've said before, here and elsewhere - I don't really ship. But I do find the dynamics between Palpatine and Anakin, Palpatine and Windu, and Palpatine and Padmé, interesting to read about and explore.

On to part two …
