I LIKE this opening.

(For some reason I keep expecting someone to die and this to end up being a closed-door murder mystery party.

Hmmm. Perhaps I've read too many Agatha Christie novels as a kid, (all 60 or so in the fourth grade) and now "excellent suspense + upper-class social gathering + multiple sources of interpersonal conflict" has hardwired into my brain to ask the automtic qurstion "I wonder who the murderer will be?"

...Um, Yeah. My mind is a strange place sometimes.)

Still, excellent first chapter.

Ha! Well, I don't promise a murder mystery (not sure my plot skills would stand up to figuring out whodunnit), but I'll try to make it a fun ride. And there's a little mystery, in figuring out who'll wind up in bed with whom … and how many times. :)

Have you ever watched The Secret of My Success? It's a Michael J. Fox movie, from the late '80s, I think. Anyway, there's a fantastic bed-swapping sequence where the camera just hovers over the stairwell and watches the people going back and forth, trying to find each other's rooms … and, you know, I've always loved that scene. *smirking*

Obi-Wan has caught on that Ryn is the lesser of two evils: she will never present a serious threat to Anakin's Jedi training. Padmé, on the other hand …

No, I haven't caught that one -- it sound entertaining! I was thinking of Tom Jones, the movie of the book, and its haw-haw British sultriness, for lack of a better term. "Secret" seems to be in the same smirky category.

I've not read or watched that, so I can't comment. But the Fox movie was pretty good - not too deep, lots of laughs. I enjoyed it.

Yeah, and I think maybe there's a "devil you know" sort of thing going on, too. At the end of the day, he doesn't think Ryn has whatever it would take to draw Anakin away from the Jedi Order. But Padmé has his heart, and from Obi-Wan's point of view, that'd be dangerous.
