Disclaimer: George Lucas owns Star Wars. This story is purely a work of fan fiction, and I am not making any profit from it.

Author's note: Yeah, I'm not sure what this is. FFV outtake!fic, let's say. Just something to keep myself amused …

[what we don't know]

“Here’s what we know,” the Lorethan woman at the front of the room said. “At three hundred hours, fifty-three minutes this morning, Coruscant Standard Time, the garrison in Mal Criatha fell to attack by overwhelming Separatist forces.” She paused to let that sink in, then punched up the holographic display. “At eleven hundred hours, twenty-eight minutes, the garrison was retaken by Republic forces under the command of General Kenobi. At thirteen hundred hours, forty-two minutes, the CIS disclosed a list of prisoners, in accordance with the Principles of Sentient Warfare. The chief medical officer assigned to General Kenobi’s unit then compared that list with his own list of dead and wounded.” She looked up and met Anakin’s eyes across the length of the room. “The Republic commander originally assigned to defend the garrison under the authority of the Jedi Council, Lorethan ex-patriate Areth’ryn Orun, was not on either list.”

Anakin blinked; beside him, Obi-Wan was a stiff presence, alert but giving nothing away. “Then where is she?”

The Lorethan, an Ardel with sharp green eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor, glared at him for interrupting, but answered readily enough. “That’s one of the things we don’t know,” she said flatly. “The official story is that she is MIA, but a Senate sub-committee contacted us this afternoon to inquire about the possibility of defection.” She speared Anakin with another glare. “We are skeptical.”

“Ryn would never -” he began, cutting himself off as Obi-Wan laid an admonitory hand on his arm.

Lieutenant Ardel’s gaze sharpened even further. “Thus our skepticism,” she noted dryly. “In any case, since Commander Orun is not with us, and the Separatists insist that she is not with them, and she has not made contact to tell us she is with anyone else ... our best guess is that the Separatists do have her, and are holding her for information.”

“By which,” said Makesh, standing behind her shoulder, “we mean torture.”

Yeah, I’m getting that part, Anakin thought, but he knew too much about Makesh, and Ryn, and the two of them together, to put any real bite into it.

Beside him, Obi-Wan sat up a little straighter and met Lieutenant Ardel’s eyes. “Where do we start?”
