Well, another politician's life has blown up in the media. No surprises here - a person with a family and a career that puts them all in the public eye makes a decision that what they want is more important than the hearts and lives of the people that they are suppose to love -- it happens every day, minute by minute.
There's a debate about whether or not Sanford can continue as Governor; I think most people would agree that he could if he simply wanted to continue to live in the Governor's mansion and hold a title. Mark Sanford battled our State Legislature on just about everything before his affair was made public knowledge; now, we're talking all out war, he would be Governor in name only. He seems to be a broken person that doesn't appear to be in fighting form.
We all know what is going to happen and I dread the next few days, possibly weeks. Publicly, the GOP will express sorrow over the pain that this causes his family, they will denounce his actions paying special attention to his irresponsible behavior in leaving SC without letting anyone know where he was. Although we know that people did know where he was -- just not officially. There will be media mouths that make hay by acting outraged over his lack of morality while barely containing their gleeful hand-rubbing over the salacious bits of the story, (like the emails ) and when they are finished pontificating they will walk away from the cameras and microphones and indulge in their own brand of hypocrisy. Examples? Rush Limbaugh and his oxycontin addiction that he broke the law in obtaining, or Bill O'Reilly's sexual harassment law suit and his own creepy voice mails and emails. I pick these two simply because they both have made millions of dollars by duping people into believing that they uphold any principles or morales other than the ones that fatten their wallets.
As for a majority of the people of SC; the part of the population that has no access to our political system other than The State newspaper and/or the local tv news, they will be disgusted, disappointed, outraged, and generally 'out-of-sorts'. Remember, this is a state that elected Strom Thurmond over and over and over and who's educational system is at the bottom of the ranks. They will march in the streets and threaten violence over a defunct flag not being displayed but they will sit quietly while their children graduate school uneducated and insist that if we just had the ten commandments hanging in each classroom and prayed well... then all our ills would be healed. They live in fear of anything that isn't rubber stamped status quo.
The rest of the population that has personal knowledge of our politicians and higher level government servants will shake our heads (like I do now) and wonder what the final fall-out will be. The politicians themselves will be huddled, calculating how they can transmute this sad story into personal gain and jockeying for position in front of whatever camera is closest.
Then, the story will repeat itself somewhere else - just with different names.
