I’ve just completed the sorta-second phase for my sorta-job. Actually it is a job because I’m being employed to contribute something but I’m not being payed. I am a volunteer! The Greens WA sent a notice for young (15-30) year olds who were interested to contribute their thoughts/insight/provide information on the WA election for www.vibewire.com as a www.ElectionTracker.com (my not be the complete address). I’m one of the five people from WA to be chosen to contribute. I have two articles for 1200-1500 words with an analytical/ investigative approach. I’ll be writing on the social impact of the Liberal Party (gay consent age, marijuana legislation) and looking at the shift from moderate to conservative of Colin Barnett.
Suddenly I have graduated to become a hack, a freelance journo. I now have the social excuse to sip tea be armed in public with a tape recorder. Although I think the tea is giving me gas, still, it was very nice tea. Like anybody who was anxious to get the job they want to do I sounded vague, jittery and too young/ incompetent/ stupid for the position. Fortunately it was a call to make sure I wanted the job, so I’d already landed it on the skill of my writing. This is fantastic although it’s bit like landing on my feet and having to run.
Tomorrow I have to take the cat to the vet (who is running as the Liberal for Capel and looks like he was moulded from the Planet of the Rubber People) and I’m not confident that I will be returning with my dearly beloved kitty alive. Then on Friday I have my driving test, which I’m trying not to panic about, but is pretty much ingrained on my mind at the moment and the deadline is this Saturday. The good news was the woman I had to ring sounded young herself, relaxed and it was a very comfortable atmosphere so I’m sure if the bottom of my world fell through I could push the deadline forward a day at least.
