Ishtar is one of the goddesses who descends to the underworld. In her case, it is to retrieve the god of vegetation, Tammuz, and return him to the sunlight, bringing fertility back to the earth. She is also the creator Goddess. She is a powerful, forthright woman, a lawgiver and teacher, the deity of both love and war, a mother and the giver of plenty.
