THIS EXO graphic (credits to

“Are you going now?”
Kai turned slowly to see Suho standing behind him.
“It’s time,” Kai responded. His leader nodded.
“A year,” Suho sighed. “It’s been too long.”
Kai looked down, clenching his hands. We’ll be together someday...
“Baekhyun thinks he saw Lay in the mirror the other day,” Suho continued. He chuckled a bit. “I would call him crazy, but I felt Xiumin’s presence that same time.”
“That means it’s almost here...” Kai started. His voice trailed off, too nervous, too scared, to say those hopeful words.
Suho smiled, broad and tired, before reaching out to pat Kai’s shoulder. “Return safely.”
Kai’s lips tilted up. “Don’t worry about me.”
The older male chuckled lightly, watching as Kai adjusted the ring on his finger, jewels that spelled out EXO sparkling softly in the pale moon’s light. He took a step forward.
“Visit Sehun first, will you?” Suho said, smiling sadly. “He doesn’t really talk to me anymore.”
Kai frowned as he noticed Suho’s eyes, the thin wrinkles around them and the heavy glaze they carried from weariness, responsibility, separation. They looked so wrong against the usually bright face of his leader.
“Of course, hyung. Don’t worry about it.”
A smile, a snap of the fingers, and Kai disappeared in black smoke.
---
He was just where Kai had last seen him.
A cloudy haze of dust scattered around Kai as he landed in the desert. In the past week a few straggly sprouts had managed to rise up from the sand, but other than that the vast land was as flat and silent as it was when Kai had last visited.
“Even the scenery is as depressing as you are,” he commented. He smiled down at the younger boy.
Sehun sat still in his chair, unresponsive to Kai’s arrival.
“I know I say this every time I visit,” Kai said, walking closer. “But maybe you should consider clearing the dust once in awhile.”
Sehun’s eyes used to remind Kai of sloths, so droopy and sleepy all the time. Yet there would always be an unmistakable twinkle in them, followed by a shy tilt of the lips and a laugh hidden behind calloused hands. But ever since the separation, they were dull and hooded, as flat as the landscape, staring forever into nothing.
“I’m going to go visit the other side,” Kai said. “Want me to say anything?”
When the skies and the ground were one, the legends, through their 12 forces, nurtured the tree of life...
“Sehun, are you listening to me?”
...an eye of red force created the evil, which coveted the heart of the tree of life, the heart slowly grew dry...
Kai sighed deeply, leaning down grasp the younger’s shoulders. “I know this is difficult, but you can’t be like this forever.”
...to attend and embrace the heart of the tree of life, the legends hereby divide the tree in half and hide each side...
“Speak, goddammit!” Kai shouted. He shook Sehun, fingers clenched painfully in the other’s jacket as he slumped to knees. “Move, scream, cry, do something.”
...hence time is overturn and space turns askew.
Kai breathed slowly as he stood up, brushing the dirt off his knees before walking away. Lifting his fingers, he paused to turn back.
“It’s not easy for the rest of us either,” he said, trying desperately to control the cracks and trembles in his voice. “We miss them too.”
Snap, poof. A few black clouds whirled in the air before settling with the brown dust. And everything was still once again.
---
Luhan stepped into the dark room, feet padding carefully around scattered silver balls. He closed his eyes and lifted his hand, listening calmly to the fluid hum of movement around him.
“Still good as ever.”
Luhan smirked slightly, opening his eyes to see Kai standing a few feet away.
“I’ve finally gotten used to your sudden arrivals,” Luhan replied. He moved his fingers and watched in amusement as Kai dodged the flying orbs.
“You’re going to have to do better than that,” Kai said, laughing as he disappeared and reappeared around different parts of the room. “I’ve gotten a lot better since last year.”
The orbs dropped a few feet before hovering unsteadily inches above the ground.
“A year,” Luhan breathed. “So long.”
The 12 forces divide into 2 and create 2 suns that look alike into two worlds that seem alike. The legends travel apart...
“I know,” Kai replied, rubbing his neck. “We’ve missed you, hyung.”
Luhan chuckled, dropping his arms. Light thuds echoed around the room. “Hyung...I haven’t heard that in ages.”
...the legends shall now see the same sky but stand on different grounds...
“How is everyone?” Luhan asked. “Is Suho still being as leaderly as ever?”
Kai laughed at the impish grin on Luhan’s face. “Even more so now. I think I overheard Baekhyun and Chanyeol try to plan his kidnapping at one point. He nags us a lot.”
“Ah, a very good leader then,” Luhan giggled.
...shall stand on the same ground but see different skies......
“How...how is Sehun?” he quietly asked.
Kai shifted his eyes, choosing his words cautiously before replying. “He’s not handling the separation very well.”
He could see, could feel, the vibration of the orbs as some rolled around in uneven, mindless patterns. In the following pause, there was only the metallic hum of wavering movement.
“But it’s been a year,” Luhan finally replied.
A year, Kai thought tiredly. Only a year...and it feels like an eternity.
“Hyung,” Kai choked. He looked up, eyes pleading and broken. “Please...he misses you so much.”
There were multiple loud clangs as the orbs crashed to the floor, long forgotten as Luhan reached forward to catch Kai in his arms. He could smell the dry musk of sand on the younger’s clothing, could feel the pain and loneliness echoed across the planet.
“It’s going to be okay,” Luhan mumbled. “We’re going to be fine.”
Kai leaned into Luhan’s touch for a while longer before pulling away, stretching a small smile across his face.
“Sorry about that," Kai said, wiping his eyes roughly. "Well, I have to go visit Kris hyung so I guess I’ll see you later." He gave one last wave before stepping back.
“If you see him,” Luhan called out, “tell him I’m doing fine.”
Kai lifted his fingers with a final grin. “I will.”
Luhan's eyes followed the movement of smoke floating around the silver orbs. He stretched forth his hands, watching as the orbs danced in harmony with the fading black fumes.
...the day the grounds beget a single file before one sky, in two worlds that seem alike, the legends will greet each other...
Like two halves. Like two beings that belonged with one another.
---
“I’m back,” Kai said. He walked towards Sehun. “I have a message from Luhan hyung.”
Leaning down, Kai whispered words - we'll always be together, tears- don't forget me, heartache- don't leave me, memories- sunshine, kites, late night ice cream, love that spread across the planet, across any distance, into Sehun’s ear.
...the day the red force is purified and the 12 forces reunite into one perfect root...
Kai straightened his back, touching Sehun lightly on the shoulder before turning away.
A frail wind gently blew on a small sprout near his shoe and Kai watched as little cyclones of dust moved across the landscape. As he felt his collar flapping in the wind, Kai turned around.
“Sehun...” he breathed.
The younger boy looked up, eyes still holding ache and desperation. But there it was. That little twinkle, that little burst of life, of hope, love.
...a new world shall open up.
