Whistle-blowers aboard a Greek-flagged cargo ship led authorities to discover that the vessel's crew was illegally dumping oily wastes into the ocean, resulting in the ship's company, Calypso Marine, agreeing to pay a $1 million fine, the U.S. attorney's office in Seattle announced Tuesday.

Coast Guard inspectors boarded the 35,000-ton bulk carrier Tina M in Kalama, a port on the Columbia River, in May.

Assistant U.S. Attorney James Oesterle, who prosecuted the case, said the fine of $500,000 per count of falsifying record books is about average. Prosecutors in Seattle and elsewhere around the nation have brought charges against a string of vessels whose engineers used a system known as a "magic pipe" to dump oily sludge and bilge wastes.

The Tina M's chief engineer, Jesus Sedigo Reyes, pleaded guilty to making a false statement. He is scheduled for sentencing July 6.
