Although I don't think it's because I "don't really have a local identity to begin with." For some reason, ever since the earliest days of radio broadcasting the Midwest accent has been the Officially Acceptable Accent of American Mass Media. I don't know why, but I do know that the accent itself doesn't signify a lack of local identity. (Johnny Carson would be the exemplar of the breed, in case you're wondering.)
