Great Moments in Civil Service

Yesterday, one of my analysts showed me an Annual Evaluation given to an employee in our department. It contained the following sentence:

"During this entire rating period, the employee has been conscious."

Who says public sector standards are low?

I took a vacation day today so I could stay home and watch college basketball. Tomorrow I'll get up early and go over to the home of our band's lead singer and piano player, where our lead singer and I will spend all day Saturday and Sunday watching hoops. By Monday, I expect my eyes will have turned orange, with "Wilson" written on them.

I love March Madness.

Sadly, though, I can't honestly say that during this entire rating period, I've been conscious.

Two new shows on NBC last night that I enjoyed: "Andy Barker, P.I." and "Raines." The former stars the ever-affable Andy Richter, ex-Conan sidekick, as an accountant whose new office is the former home of a private investigator. Andy is mistaken for the gumshoe and hi-jinx ensue. "Raines" stars Jeff Goldblum as an LAPD homicide detective who sees the image of whichever victim whose murder he's investigating. In the pilot, that victim is played by the actress who played Electric Girl on "Angel." (Can't remember the character's name, but you know who I mean.) Nice LA atmosphere, decent characterizations, and the high concept works for me. I've always enjoyed Goldblum, and this more somber version of his persona suits his age and the story. These two shows make a nice pair: "Andy Barker" is wryly amusing with melancholy moments, while "Raines" is melancholy with wryly amusing moments. The big surprise at the end of "Raines" was no surprise to anyone who's watched more than a few hours of TV, but it still provided a long-term plot device that should be useful. I'm not sure what the last March hit was - "Buffy"? - but I hope these both find an audience.
