We have woken up today to find Lincoln under two inches of snow. The paperboy hasn't made it yet, and our central heating sounds like it's struggling. Last night, walking back from the Indian after a delicious chicken dopiaza, it was so cold that it hurt to breathe in, and you could feel that winter was roling its sleeves up for business. Near our house, there was a hedgehog crouching in the middle of the road. We watched it nervously while it looked about, but then after a car drove straight over it (the tyres miraculously missing it altogether), I ran out and picked it up (OUCH) and dropped it into someone's leafy garden. They are hibernating at this time of year, and a lot of people making bonfires tend to disturb them. Did you know a bonfire is literally a fire of bones? When we got in we made mulled wine and had gluten-free mince pies with brandy butter.
It's been a long hard tiring week and I'm pleased it's the weekend. I was lecturing solidly on Monday and Tuesday, at the BBC on Wednesday, reporting on Thursday, and running MA masterclasses on Friday. Now I plan on reading the papers and drinking endless cups of coffee, and working out how to say "chicken dopiaza" in Hindi (two onions? Not quite sure what that last -a is doing..).
