Stephen Fry's recent blog entry has been picked up by virtually every language planet in the blogosphere. But if you haven't seen it yet, it's very worth reading and finally settles those niggling doubts over where Stephen fits on the prescriptivist-descriptivist continuum. Happily, we now know. Annoyingly, though unsurprisingly, he argues the case ( Read more... )

I've had that blog post open in my tabs since he posted it and STILL haven't got around to reading it. I really should - it keeps cropping up everywhere. And I love that paragraph. I was about to suggest printing it out, and then I saw you'd already told me to. So I will.

That video rocks my world. I want it to go viral so badly, and then I can say I was the third person to post it!

Well, I'm glad to help in that noble mission!

So tell me about your pilot. Who sees it now? Are they broadcasting it anywhere?

My pilot was one of two filmed. I think it will only be seen by the execs who commission new series, and, should the series be successful and produce a DVD I might be in the bonus features. Other than that I don't think it will be broadcast. Thank God!

But I'm going to see if I can get a copy - the advantage of knowing all the higher-ups!

Yes! But also, presumably you'll be in a good position to apply to be in the Real show, if it gets commissioned..

The thing is, I'm really not sure I want to be on the real thing. For a whole cacophany of reasons!

While I have discovered that I can be on TV and do the funny thing successfully I'm not convinced I want to forge a career in that direction, and even if I did, I doubt this would be the way to do it. I would look like a desperate fan who will do anything as long as it means I get to be involved with QI, which just isn't the case. Doing the pilot scraped the boarder of that, I think. If I'm on broadcast TV everyone I know will have justifiable cause to mock me. And I'm sure there are other reasons but I can't think of them off the top of my head....

Forge a career?? I thought you were just a guest! Anyway, being on telly doesn't get you mocked too much, and in some ways it's actually quite helpful -- people are sure to email me if they think I need a haircut, for example.

I mean a career on TV - a lot of people have suggested that being on the show as a guest could get me on the bottom rung, and, like you said - I was only a contestant - this is not the way to do it, if that's what I was aiming for!

I would get mocked - I have the dickish kind of personality that is ripe for mocking...

Don't do it for a career, just do it for the fun of it - and of course for the opportunities to meet several funny people and expand your sexo-comedic empire.
