Well it's taken me a week to summon up the willpower to post again, the last few days having passed in a welter of post-holiday blues compounded by acute jetlag.  We flew with Zoom, a budget airline, and the plane we came back over the Atlantic in was tiny - like the little planes you use to go over to France.  I was terrified.

The only people who like Toronto are Torontonians. :-)

Next time you are in Canada, I hope you get a chance to visit Montreal, one of the most interesting cities in North America in my opinion. I adore that place: really interesting mix of french and anglo culture, some lovely neighbours filled with history, great places to go at night, and much much more.

The service industry is definitely better over there, but then you must remember that they depend a lot more on the tips to survive, so they either behave nicely to the customer or they don't pay their rent! I do find sometimes that people are nice but not in a genuine way, and it can be refreshing to deal with someone here and know exactly where you stand with them.

I like that here too. It was just a refreshing change I think....
I heard a lot of good things about Montreal actually, and about Ottawa. Since H's sister lives out there, we're bound to be going back at some point.

I tend to wish people a good day if I'm in a shop and we've had a chat or they've offered me particularly good service, or if I'm not in a grump... And I'm always met with such pleased astonishment, it's crazy. It just seems like a nice thing to say to someone, but no-one ever said it to me when I worked in shops. I'd sometimes say it to them.

Jealous of your adventures. They sound wonderful...
