The most popular books on LibraryThing sorted by original language:
French: The Stranger by Camus
German: Siddhartha by Hesse
Japanese: The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Murakami
Spanish: One Hundred Years of Solitude by Márquez
Russian: Crime & Punishment by Dostoyevsky
Italian: The Name of the Rose by Eco
Dutch: Anne Frank's Diary
Portuguese: The Alchemist by Coelho
Chinese: Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu
Arabic: The Qur'an
Polish: Solaris by Stanisław Lem
oh and English: Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling
I'm quite surprised by some of these. I would never have guessed Hesse would come out over Kafka in German, or that Eco would have more readers than Dante for Italian. It's also interesting that the Spanish and Portuguese writers are both from the New World.
I'm quite embarrassed to realise that of these books, I've only read the French (overrated), Portuguese (shite), Arabic (interesting) and English (pretty good) entries. I started The Name of the Rose when I was away once, but I think I lost my copy before I finished it.
