So far, my resolution to read one French book for every two English ones this year is going according to plan, more or less, although it does mean the number of books I'll get through has dropped alarmingly. I just finished Adam Roberts's brilliant, brilliant Yellow Blue Tibia, which if it hadn't been brought out by a science fiction author would ( Read more... )

Your posts are like visits -- nourishing but always too brief.

I'm reading oodles of things as usual but am especially -- again -- excited about Henry James. And this morning I was telling my therapist how for me reading isn't an escape -- it's too easy to call it that -- but it's actually like looking into a mirror. No matter what novels I pick up seemingly at random, there's always things in them that teach me about myself, my own life. Right now I'm reading The Wings of the Dove, which is fairly terrifying.

Don't forget to mark your calendar -- I'll be in Paris from Apr 9 to 23rd, and hope to see you and H and have some conversations.

Ah thanks! I have never read any Henry James -- maybe I will try and remedy that this year. And I agree with what you say about reading. I mean, some books *are* an escape for me, and I love that too, but what I prefer is the feeling that you're having an intelligent conversation with someone else's mind.

You've been in the calendar for months! We'll be around for most of the time you're here, so we'll definitely hook up. I have a stack of resto recommendations to show you....

You MUST read some James. He can be a major commitment in terms of length and concentration needed, but some of his best things are stories such as "The Author of Beltraffio" and "The Beast in the Jungle". I think my favorite thing by him is the novelWhat Maisie Knew which is short and devastating.

I look forward to your restaurant recs, and any other recs for insider's Paris. Though I'm waiting to hear from my accountant as to whether my tax situation may call for me postponing the trip. Hopefully I'll get encouraging news and before the weekend.
