"In honor of All Hallow's Eve, today we will be transfiguring these miniature pumpkins into candle wicks." Professor Peregrine told his class as they settled down. He grinned at a few of their costumes, before moving on to the incantation. "Candela pomum."
He tapped the little pumpkin on his desk and transfigured it into a candle. "Okay? Let's all give it a try."

"Okay!" Jeannie answered his question, even though it was rhetorical, because she didn't know what 'rhetorical' meant. She was exceedingly cheerful - YAY HALLOWEEN - and dressed up as a niffler. So sort of like (in her opinion) a cross between a rat and an armadillo, but whatever. And it was kind of hard for her to walk around, but again, it didn't matter.
She did her best to hold her wand with her claw-like glove, and after a moment of effort got herself to hold it, and beamed with pride.

The class seemed more excited about this little experiment than his older students, so Professor Peregrine grinned. He started on his usual walk around the classroom to help his students with their incantation, pausing at Jeannie's desk in the middle.
"Good morning, Jeannie," he greeted her. "Nice costume! Niffler right? Are you ready to transfigure your pumpkin?"

"Good morning, Professor! Thank you! Yep it is! Yes I am ready!" Jeannie answered all four of his remarks in one go, grinning happily. Okay, well, maybe she wasn't as ready as she thought she was, since her wand fell out of her hand again moments after the words came out of her mouth. She frowned and put it back in her hand, this time more firmly. Candela pomum, she told herself the incantation again in her head, just in case.
"Candela pomum," she repeated happily, and squealed with delight as her pumpkin began to transform. It never got old! Her wick turned out all right - kind of orange and pumpkin-shaped, and it still had a bit of a stem at the top, but still a candle. Good for the first try, hopefully.

"Good job, Jeannie," he grinned at her. "Would you like to transfigure one of these pins into a matchstick so you can light your candle?"
He handed her a pin and hoped that she remembered her previous lesson, even if she wanted to transfigure it into a bright pink matchstick. Once lit, the pink would fade and her candle could be tested. He really doubted that if the candle was still a pumpkin underneath that it would be damaged by flame.

"Oooh, I get to light it?" Jeannie practically glowed with excitement. How fun! She took the pin from him gratefully, placing it on the table and concentrating for a moment on remembering the spell. Oh, that was like, two weeks ago... Jeannie thought hard. It took her a moment, but she soon beamed happily, remembering the spell.
"Aduro fodio," she said, and her pin turned neatly into a matchstick. Albeit she still had the problem with making it too pink, but she had long since decided that didn't matter - she liked pink. Jeannie paused; what was she supposed to do now, test it? Uh-oh. She looked up at the professor, and bluntly said, "I'm scared of fire!"

He nodded, smiling at her excitement, and happy that she remembered the incantation from a few weeks ago. "Good, Jeannie," he eyed the bright pink matchstick and was about to walk to the next desk when she stopped him.
Scared of fire? He wasn't anticipating that. Especially since the castle was full of torches and candles. "All right," he took the matchstick from her desk and striked it against the side, lighting it. He set the flame to the candle, before shaking his wrist and extinguishing the matchstick. "What do you think of your candle, Jeannie?"
