Laine never had been one for pouncing on students the moment they walked in the library. First of all, who was to say they wanted her help? Yes, most of them needed it, but if they didn't want it she wasn't going to force it on them. It promoted the casual, comfortable atmosphere she was going for, letting people look around on their own. Also, she hated that! Stores and places where people practically jumped you. SO obnoxious, and in her mind, the library was more browsable than even the most fashionable shop in Diagon or Hogsmeade. Plus it could be a waste of her time, asking every single person if they needed her

Perhaps she wasn't incompetent and actually had a bead on how to perform her job.
Or perhaps she was incompetent and had a strong trait or two. Even dogs did. Didn't they.
He nodded with mild interest, pausing before voicing his next thought. "Also," he went on carefully, "I know that at a certain point, it rather gained popularity in usage, and I wondered if there was a way to find periodicals or newspapers from the time that might have remarked on it." Of course, it was only a hunch, but he was quite sure that with spells and their tendencies to go in and out of fashion, the 1970s might have been an interesting time for popularity in Protean charms.
