“Hey. What are you doing up?”
“I can’t sleep in the daytime… well… sometimes... I guess just not today. You can put her in her crib…”
“Yeah. But there’s nothing says I have to, is there?” He pats the sofa beside him, and she eases down into it.
“She has to learn to sleep there…not on top of one of us.”
“Yeah, I’m figuring by the time she gets to junior high this will be pretty much history.”
“Danny… you’re not going to be one of those fathers that does whatever his daughter wants are you?”
“I’m thinking the ship has pretty much sailed on that one.”
“You’ll spoil her… She’ll be one of those unbearable little toads that are always showing off.”
He looks at her limpidly. “And you don’t think that genetics have pretty well dictated that already?”
She smacks him lightly across the back of his head. “I’m assuming that’s your contribution to her DNA. I was a perfect angel.”
He pulls her closer for a kiss, and the sleeping baby moans and sniffles.
“Sssh.” He says. “You’ll wake her, and then you’ll have to feed her.”
She leans silently against him.
“But just for the record,” he says softly, “I too have a liberal arts degree… in which I took courses in Anthropology and Psychology, and you can’t spoil babies by holding them. You can’t spoil babies at this age at all…. I’m pretty sure they’ve got to be at least a week old.” He grins, then puts his arm around her and kisses her forehead.
“I’m just going to close my eyes for a minute,” she says.
“Sure,” he says, “No worries.”
