Zoey was completely absorbed by the book in front of her. Legs crossed Indian style, she twirled the pen in one hand as she flipped to the next page with the other. This Italian assignment on Mount Vesuvius was taking way too long. The speaking Italian part she had down. It was the information behind it that was the problem.

The fifteen year old sighed and jerked another page over, chewing on her bottom lip. Professore Maher had completely lost it; it was only Italian Three, there wasn’t any need to go all out. And he really hadn’t needed to tell them to bring something “new” to the presentation. ‘What was there new about a volcano that erupted centuries ago?’.

Her eyebrows rose as she found something that might work. She bent over to jot a note down and a knock on her door drew her attention away.

Zoey looked up at the figure and ducked her head back down to finish the sentence. “Hey, Dad.”

Her father walked closer to the bed. “You’re up late, Zoe.”

She thought about saying he was home late, but settled for pointedly waving a hand at the papers and books in front of her. “Just working on this assignment.”

That drew him in and she should have known he would become interested. She’d be lucky if she didn’t get a history lesson or some other type of lesson in the next few minutes.

Strong fingers turned the cover over in order to read it. “Italian?” he made a noise in his throat. “Birthplace of the piano, the Roman Empire, and the ice cream cone. The Italians have never been so great with the whole government thing, but the ice cream cone makes up for their mistakes, I think.”

Zoey couldn’t help the smile that tugged at her mouth. Her Dad’s never ending vault of seemingly useless knowledge was annoying to some, but she liked it. If he was there to tell her weird facts, then it meant he was there and not off somewhere else.

She looked up at him. “Know anything about Mount Vesuvius? I need something new."

He joined her on the bed, that unique spark entering his eyes. “Well now, did you know Mount Vesuvius erupted during World War Two?”
