Musings Upon Women

Mar 11, 2007 21:36

Who: Jordan Rivers and Daphne Greengrass.
When: Unspecified, most likely in an afternoon.
Where: A hall somewhere.
Warnings: Nothing really. Jordan's a bit stupid, but then again he usually is.

Jordan leaned against the wall, looking bored. Daphne had said that she would meet him here, fourth floor, the corridor near the bathrooms. Maybe she was off 'doing her business'. He shrugged, and stretched.

Daphne, of course, was prompt and dressed to kill. Despite the aggravations of the previous day, she was well-put together and collected, as she always was. And now that her mission was set and in effect, she felt like she had a purpose and a goal. That was the most important thing.

She was mildly surprised to see Jordan on her way back from her "thinking place." She had asked him here, hadn't she? Well...this could work to her advantage.

"Hello, my darling. And how are you this afternoon?"

He smiled, and nodded to her. "Hey. I'm doing all right... at least I think I am, now that I've finished my essay. What's up? Did you ask me here for a reason?" He liked Daphne, and he frankly thought that she was one of the most attractive girls in Hogwarts. Anyone would agree, he thought. She looked good, she seemed to do well in class, and she was nice to him, that was the most important thing. Though he was fairly certain she wouldn't appreciate a prank - so no Fanged Frisbees when she was around, got it.

"Actually, yes. As you know, I've been away for awhile...I feel like I've fallen behind hopelessly in my social circle."

Linking her arm around his, she began to lead him away and down the hallway, direction unknown.

"Can you tell me all that I've missed? I've heard a little bit about the ordeal with this Sora character, but I don't know many details. I wanted to visit him, but I didn't want to say anything that might upset the poor boy..."

He played with his hair a moment, and tilted his head. "Well, since the incident, there have been a bunch of people going in and out of the hospital ward... there've been a bunch of people who have been sick. I haven't come down with anything, fortunately. I don't really hang around much with Sora's friends, so I'm not quite sure what he's been doing..."

She paused in the middle of the hallway with a resolute sniff and nodded. Then, collecting herself, she gave the boy's arm a gentle pat.

"Alright, then. Well. Let's not talk about that. I'm sure everything is fine. I actually needed to speak to you about two individual people. Marluxia and Xemnas. I was wondering if you knew anything about their whereabouts, or what they have been up to lately? I'm afraid my curiousity will only be satiated with answers."

She gave him a sweet smile and continued on.

Jordan nodded, and thought for a long moment. "I think Marluxia's been a bit out of it, from what I've heard... don't know how reliable that is, though... haven't seen him much. Xemnas I haven't seen at all, but I don't have any classes with him. I've mostly been trying to bring up my marks... they're slipping a bit, and Mum won't be happy with me if I get bad O.W.L.s again."

She nodded gravely, her mind working at the pace of a mile a minute. This could work to her advantage...from what she had seen and heard, the Organization was in shambles. It was the perfect time to make her move. So, with a pretty smile, she lightly patted Jordan's arm.

"You've been so good to me, Jordan. You know, you're one of my favorites. I fear that I'd be utterly lost without you. So, if there is ever anything I can do for you, you let me know. Alright?"

He smiled back at her. She was so nice-looking, but of course he would never have a chance with her. "Ah, thanks, Daphne. I appreciate it... and really, if there's anything else I can do for you, just tell me. You're one of the few people who actually don't mind talking to me. It's kind of nice to be able to get social break from all the mountains of essays."

"Understandable. We must all stay abreast in our studies. However, it is always nice to detain ourselves with amiable company. And now, I don't believe for a second that you do not have other friends. I'm sure all the ladies in your house must flock around you like love-sick sparrows."

No, she had no definite goal in granting Jordan a few compliments, which was rare. However, she figured that actually being nice for no reason could have its benefits, too.

His smile broke into a grin, and he laughed. "Ah, yeah, I'd like to think that. Most of them seem to be trying to go after boys in the other houses. But... there are a few that are available... we have a vague study group, and I've been trying to talk to them outside of classes and our studies. You're not with anyone, though, are you? I would figure the Slytherin boys would be all over you."

"Let me give you a little bit of advice, Jordan. Women are attracted to confidence. If you believe that you're worth having, then they will believe it, too. I recommend that you find a girl you have affections for and make yourself known. She can't ignore you if you are all she sees. Don't push too many boundaries...but breaking a few can often be considered charming."

It was only afterwards that she realized that her advice could be taken a little too extremely and result in stalking. With a shrug, she continued on.

"I'm afraid I have yet to find an adequate partner. I have exquisite taste and a certain decorum that most men can't meet. I'm afraid that those who pursue me are either below my standards or frightening in their own right."

Jordan nodded, and sighed. "I understand. Of course. A woman like you would have very high standards." 'Which means I don't ever have a chance with her, but can't blame me for being interested.' "What you said about confidence is probably true, though. Maybe I'll try going after one of them. It's worth a try."

"I was bred to have high standards. And one has to be careful who they trifle with. Reputations are far more valuable than some assume."

She offered him another lovely smile.

"I suggest you march up to whoever you have an inclination towards and introduce yourself, or ask them to sit next to you at dinner. Personally, I'd like something to accompany such an offer...perhaps orchids or jewelery. However, I have much finer tastes than most. I believe you have the characteristics of becoming quite the ladies' man."

"I suppose that's true..." He scratched his head. "Maybe on the next Hogsmead visit I'll stop in one of the shops and buy her something. I just hope she's not terribly allergic to anything."

"Well, on the bright side...if she is, she'll likely have to be put into the hospital wing, and then you can visit her there and shower her with more gifts. It's a good situation for both of you, I'd say. I wouldn't worry on it too much...it's not too hard to woo someone."

He froze a moment, and pulled a piece of parchment out from his pocket. "Oh..." He stifled his curse, and winced. "Daphne, I'm really very sorry about this, but I need to go and grab my things... I'm to meet the others in the library for a study session. Not that I particularly want to, but grades are grades."

She smiled thinly.

"Well, you can't keep your peers waiting. I'll call on you another time. Grades must come first, no?"

He nodded, and headed off down the hallway, trying to supress the blush that was now working its way onto his cheeks. That girl... she was wonderful to him. 'Jordan, snap out of it, you lovesick puppy. Time for work.'
