Note: Some of this is HeadCanon, of course, and mostly just for my own reference.
To Craft a Weapon
In September of the year 1976, in Nibelheim, the Scientists Dr. Crescent and, at that time, Dr. Hojo, with the assistance of Professor Gast, then head of the Science Department, concocted a plan. The point of the Jenova Project was to create a Cetra by merging genetic material from a discovered Cetra, which they named Jenova, with a human in order to allow ShinRa to pursue the Promised Land, which legend says all Cetra can find.
The plan concocted was simple. Dr. Crescent and Dr. Hojo found themselves expecting, and where other projects had failed, Hojo was certain he had the solution. Instead of infusing the mother with Jenova cells, like rivals of his, he decided it would be best if the fetus were to grow from it's earliest stages along with the Jenova cells. Professor Gast approved the project and it proceeded. The cells were injected when Dr. Crescent was in her second month of pregnancy. At first, it seemed as though nothing had changed, but as the months progressed and as Dr. Crescent became increasingly ill, slowly losing her sanity, it became apparent something was happening with the child.
