It was this part of the day that he hated the most. It was just so difficult for him-why couldn’t they just skip it and go to the next part already? Why did they have to say good-bye and leave each other; why couldn’t they just go their separate ways and just meet again the next day? Why did they have to pull away from each other, pull and tug, pull and tug, never truly separating, always with that strand connecting them, and during the whole thing, that pain, that pain, just like having a fingernail ripped out, only this pain wasn’t just concentrated in one spot-it spread through his whole body and he just couldn’t stand it, he just couldn’t stand it.
Of course, he never said this.
He never cried out; he just looked at him with those hard, golden eyes, showing nothing. Such a light, beautiful color, yet conveying only darkness, deep and unfathomable. He stood and stared and said nothing, pulling up his collar against the cool breeze. Sometimes, he’d just leave, and he’d just watch his retreating form, hands in his pockets, hair tousled by the wind, stars twinkling and extinguishing above him. Sometimes, they’d sit beside each other for moments and hours and minutes and he’d lose track of time before he finally left.
His hand twitched.
He said nothing as Phinx kissed him on the cheek.
His hand twitched again.
Phinx turned, then began walking away. Feitan raised his hand, clutched and grasped the air, as if strangling it. Then, his hand slowly relaxed again. Tilted to one side, tilted to the other.
He waved.
Phinx paused, then looked back. A smirk played across his lips. He waved back, saluting him.
They needed no words, no good-byes.
All they needed was this silence, the sound of waves.
