Hi there!
Um ... so why are gas prices low again?
I mean, I want to believe that it's because there's been a majority of Liberal Democrats in Congress, and it's just taken them this long to overturn whatever mysterious underhanded price gouging techniques that George W. Bush has been using to funnel as much money as humanly possible to his Oil Company cronies.
Or it could possibly be that since we now have 44th United States President Barack Hussein Obama as the democratically elected Leader of the Free World!!, the insidious oil companies are slithering back into their caves in fear and trepidation of his mighty powers! But then, why were gas prices shrinking before Obama was actually elected, and why not wait until he's the ACTUAL President, and not just the Prez-elect?
Or is it just that the economy sucks, and people have stopped spending money on gas? This makes somewhat more sense, but it's not like there's really that many alternatives. I haven't been able to get MY Honda Civic run off some kind of Mr. Fusion attachment that converts banana peels and beer into a reliable fuel source. I suppose that if I were (Flying Spaghetti Monster forbid!) fired from my job, I'd be spending a lot less $$$ on gas. The 50 mile haul from Brick to Union really cuts into my paycheck.
But then, if less people are buying gas, wouldn't that jack the prices up MORE? I mean I guess it's possible that the heads of the major gas corporations in this country are saying to each other: "Well, we're rich beyond our wildest dreams, our salaries are in the hundreds of millions of dollars per year. Meanwhile, Joe and Jane Sixpack, the TRUE Americans, barely have enough gas to get the supermarket to buy food for their kids. Maybe we should bring the price down to under $2/gallon to ensure their continued patronage". But somehow I don't see that happening, either. It's not as if the entire country is going to just STOP driving cars. I really can't afford to stop driving, and from what I've seen during my commute, there's not a noticeable decrease in traffic. :(
And it's not that I'm complaining that I just paid $1.87/gal for gas this morning. I'm just wondering WHY. Even MY warped bleeding-heart-hippie-liberal-tree-hugger brain can't except that the new Changetm in America has the power to bring gas prices down to near pre-9/11 levels. It just can't! :(
Amusingly though, if I'd stepped into a time machine back in 2001 and emerged today, I'm sure I'd probably drop to my knees and scream: "You MANIACS!! You elected him President and now he's raised gas prices to $1.87 a gallon!! Damn youuuuuu!!! Damn you all to Hellllll!!!".
