Downtown

 Downtown on Labor Day morning... silence blankets the vacant streets, the abandoned buildings. The occasional delivery truck or far-off beep of a reversing construction vehicle cuts through the still air - intrusive, profane. Even the birds seem subdued, flocking idly between rooftops. Towers of concrete and glass loom over asphalt canyons, their purposes forgotten. It's not too hard to imagine a ragged band of travelers wandering through, skin browned and feet sore, desperate for any sign that they're not alone...
