Too much free time: seven

Confiding with friends, the young woman in line at the unemployment office spoke with complete certitude.  Wulf, standing nearby on a ladder, could not help but overhear.  “You have to know someone to get a job.”   Wulf agreed silently, continuing to install tracking for the new picture-hanging system.

The hanging system was for displaying the winning photographs of a photo contest showing people working.  One of the administrators had asked a photographer who judged the contest, Suzy Q, if she knew a good handyman.  Suzy Q immediately suggested her old friend, Wulf.

A few months later, in the blazing heat of August, Wulf was installing network cables in an attic.  It was about 130ºF, dusty, full of sharply pointed objects, inspiring Wulf to declare aloud, to no one in particular, “Time to get a regular job.”

The universe was listening.

A month ago, Captain Chuck calls, says they’ve lost some IT guys from the main office, that Wulf should send a résumé.  Wulf hasn’t updated a résumé since DOS 6 was new, so he knocks out a quick job history. Two weeks and two interviews later, in a down economy, without even looking, Wulf has a great new job.  It really isn’t as much what you know, as it is whom you know.

If ever again Wulf feels the urge to address the universe, though, it probably wouldn’t hurt to mention the lottery.
