Yaaaay for unintentional rants. :D

I seem to be doing this a lot lately. XD Anyway, somebody over on kataangforever.net (a user who is actually a pretty spammy newbie, but that's beside the point) posted a topic titled "Is it bad..." with the topic message being:

Is it really bad to be nerdy about something like ATLA or twilight? or a band?I am nerdy about many things... 0_0

I read down the posts following it and people were debating on whether or not the topic starter meant "nerdy" or "obsessive" (her only response was "lol" so I still don't know which she meant XD), but somehow that made me put aside my essay for English due tomorrow to respond with waaay more than I intended. I kind of liked what I said, so I thought I'd share. c:

Wait, do you mean is it bad to be a "nerd" (I hate labels >.>) and to simply like these things or to be an "obsessor"?

If you're just "nerdy" because you like this stuff, then there's nothing wrong with it and if people judge you for it then they're silly.

Obsessing over things such as TV Shows and bands is another thing entirely--it's not necessarily unhealthy (depending on how you deal with it), but it can cause some rifts between peers. I can speak from experience in both the healthy and unhealthy ways to obsess... so let me see if I can whip up a few examples.

I watched all the episodes of Bones in just under a week and a half--that's 74-75 episodes. I started last Thursday around 11:30 PM and finished today a little bit after 11 PM. I skipped meals and missed out on spending time with friends so I could catch up with all of the old seasons and all the episodes in the current one. That is unhealthy and I'm aware of that. I don't regret watching Bones at all--it's one of my favourite shows now--but it totally grabbed ahold of me and refused to let go. That's scary, really scary, and probably insinuates some kind of chemical imbalance in my brain but whatever. :D;

But obsessing doesn't have to be a bad thing. One of the positive ways I portray it is through writing fanfiction--using a creative muse to appreciate a fandom and its settings and characters. I absolutely love exploring the facets of characters and their relationships and so I hope to understand them better by exploring their actions and their motives for their actions through... fiction. XD Also, learning about the characters and their interactions can also help you understand real people more easily--by watching shows and learning about the characters you're being introduced to many personality types you might not have met in real life yet. They can help you form some sort of basis so you can better empathize with variations of these personality types when/if you do encounter them. c:

I definitely didn't mean for this to become as long as it did. XD; Sorry. I hope you can find an answer to your question in there somewhere. c:

Anyway, my main point was going to be if you do obsess over certain things it might make friendships harder to form, but the friends that you do make who can accept this part of you are going to be some of the best friends you will ever have. If they can appreciate you for who you are then they are worth hanging on to. :)
