Today is the 1,352nd anniversary of the Battle of Winwæd, considered by historians to mark the demise of the indigenous Anglo-Saxon religion. It was on this day when the last of England's great Pagan kings, Penda of Mercia, died in battle. His defeat is attributed to the desertion of his ally, Cadafael ap Cynfeddw (so much for those "noble" Celts). After his death, the kingdom of Mercia, that last bastion of the old religion, was converted into servitude to the desert god.
Eala Penda. Eala þa Angelgodas. Eala sé fyrn sidu.
