Juno was not a bad movie, and it did not "suck". You may have disliked it, or cared for it less than others, and as it comes to DVD where more and more people than ever will see and love it, you're hatred grows. How can they be so stupid, as to like this thing? You will ask that many times. Well, how can you like three fantasy movies about pirates in which, at the end, NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENS MAKING IT ALL USELESS POINTLESS BULLSHIT? I will ask myself that many times. Just differing opinions.
As I think about life lately I am less drawn toward things than I am freedoms and daily satisfactions. I don't see much of a future here. Specifically not in Michigan, and possibly even this country. I know I want to visit all over, but I know that the first place that grabs at me and makes me feel alive I will want to simply stay. With that in mind I just kind of want fewer things. I don't want to have to have a car. I don't want to have a house that I'm tied to. I don't want to worry about how I'm going to bring along a large tv and a few hundred DVDs along with me.
I'm thinking of trading in some old and busted games for the new GTA hotness. I'm not sure how much I'll even like it though. It looks amazing, and I have the GTA3 games, but only play them so much. This does look thoroughly improved, though.. hmm..
Don't Look Now - There is something mesmerizing about horror movies from the 70s. Not much is actually scary through the movie, though it create an interesting tension as it builds toward it's surprise/hilarious ending.
Alice, Sweet Alice - Another in our series of 70s horror flicks starring raincoats. Amazing stabbings in this movie, and one of the weirdest supporting character I can think of.
The Abandoned - Rented this not seeing it was an After Dark Horrorfest ball of shit, but at least it was one of the two foreign movies they bought the rights too, and not one of the almost-good-enough-for-youtube American entries. Still pretty bad.
The Virgin Suicides - Finally saw this. Pretty much amazing, as I'm sure everyone knows. One thing anyone not living here may not realize is how well they captured the way Michigan looks. Our lighting outside is awkward and leaves are always falling and how the early a.m. is so cold no matter what time of year it is - I can't say it is different than any other place in the country, but it felt right, living a few cities away from where it is set.
Eagle vs. Shark - New Zealand comedy with slight romance. It's somewhat easy to identify it with Napoleon Dynamite, but less .. whatever that movie does too much. Very good, and the lead male is a much more believable person than the permed Heder.
They Came Back (Revenants, Les) - I had wanted to see this movie for a few years now because the premise makes my imagination run wild: "Thousands of the recently dead inexplicably come back to life and try to integrate themselves into society." French zombies! But not zombies like we enjoy them, anyway. The movie is interesting, but drags and doesn't do nearly as much with the plot as I had been thinking could be done with it for years. The movie basically follows the stories of 3 or 4 characters dealing with their loved ones coming back, and how weird it is. All of the people don't fit in and end up wanting to segregate and be amongst themselves, which as with everything else, sounds more interesting than it is in the flick.
Fido - Cosmic radiation brings the dead back to life, in an alternate dimension 50s era, and after the huge initial outbreak and war (not shown) zombies have been domesticated as servants with special collars. Better than I expected, to be honest, not that funny, but pretty entertaining. Fido shows that zombies can love.
2 Days in Paris - As a romantic comedy it's better than just about anything else I've ever seen in that category. Nice little movie.
The Business of Being Born - Documentary about the industry of childbirth, and how hospitals are little baby factories that don't care about you or respect your wishes. Anyone who may sometime give birth should probably check it out and see what you think.
The Ruins - A feature length film based around 5 minutes of Evil Dead. Some really nice gore, but just finding the clips on youtube would have about the same effect. Everything about this movie except for the actual content, the script, is pretty well done. There is no tension building toward the fucked up things in it, and there is no big pay off. Not worth the price of admission, but worth seeing a little for the gore moments if you're into that.
