At 5am today, a day which will live in infamy...i finished the piano redux version of cake...
it's'alright...it's probably my best work to date, but it all seemed incredibly rushed here at the end. Next comes the wonderfully complicated task of orchestrating it. Granted i know how i want to do it, but i could see this process taking a good 6 months. honestly...
I just don't write music like i used to. No more of this fly-by-wire shit. I've really started taking the time to focus exactly on what i'm writing, analyze as i go, and taking all the extra time to make sure each score and each composition is perfect. It's funny, i'm far from a perfectionist, but i hate crappy looking scores...
which brings me to a gripe; conventions in vocal notation. Ok, i'm sorry, but there are things that just make no sense to me when i look at a vocal score. #1, dynamics above the staff. I understand the whole "could interfere with the lyrics" but, honestly, if the dynamics are placed correctly, and proper space given for all parts, then the dynamics shouldn't "bump" into anything. If they do, it is the fault of the engraver. The other problem i have with it is the change in eye level. This might seem like a weird gripe, but for me, when i perform, my vision kinda narrows. i don't know how else to explain it...it gave me fits in organ! At best, i can see 2 relatively closely spaced staves (ie piano scores). so, in vocal style music, i really see myself going back an forth between the music and the lyrics. Really, reading 2 forms of communication, eg multi-tasking. and it's been somewhat proven that multi-tasking is less doing two things at once, but moving from one thing to the other very quickly. So, i can tell easily because i get "tunnel-vision" but i move back an forth between the lyrics and the music. usually memorize a line of music, then read the lyrics. Now, if i'm going back an forth, especially memorizing music and reading lyrics, then wouldn't it make sense that it'd be more difficult to see expression markings ABOVE the staff when my focus is generally BELOW the staff...hm...yeah...
and then, where do we put all the other markings? style markings? notes to actors? etc? above the dynamics? see, you start pushing more toward the top. If you put the dynamics at the bottom, below the lyrics, it can kinda even out the symmetry (at least in my own pieces it seems to)
well, yeah...whatever. its 11am, i slept for 5 hours, and i have to leave for Philly here in a couple hours. gonna go work a Jefferson Starship concert. not positive of my role, may be monitor engineer, may be just sittin in the back. Whatever my role, you can rest assured
