It still needs +$300 million to break even, let alone make a profit. From the bottom of BoxOfficeMojo.com: Production Budget in millions. On average, studios earn approximately 55 percent of the final gross. It's pretty much dead domestically.

A sassy black girl? I don't think that's ever been done by Hollywood before. Nice to see that Shyamalan will be branching away from stereotypes for the second movie! *thumbs up*

WOW, only 55%? that's actually really surprising.
but now that i look at numbers for more successful franchises like transformers, that makes sense. that cost $150mil to make and grossed over $300mil DOMESTICALLY, and the sequel's domestic gross doubled its production cost as well.
it didn't do QUITE as badly as TGC (which didn't even gross half of its production cost), but since the studio was talking about it being a tentpole film, it's still performing well below expectations. and it's STILL dropping at about 50% per week in box office takes. it's only barely hanging on to the top 10.
i'd still call it a 50/50 shot whether we get a sequel - it basically depends on how stupid paramount is.

But... but didn't they spend stupid amounts on advertising and stuff?
So.... maybe they won't completely get their money back? *CLINGS TO HOPE*

... At least they still have to cover the costs for advertising and 3D conversion? :D
